Fault reporting difficulty

My problem is with a fault on adsl BB. It has been giving me 6 MB download since a visit by BT engr found several faults in the overhead connections locally. However recently the Noise margin has been changing minute by minute from around 8 dB to -.1 then a few seconds later back to  4 dB.  At the same time there is a low level hum on the Quiet Line test. Putting two and two together (Possibly wrongly) I feel the line has become unbalanced due to a bad connection. I can't imagine having to explain this to an overseas operator, or having to go through tests which tell me to change the battery in my phone since my phone does not use a battery!

I don't need BT plus mobile/wifi/more than 15MB download or speeds over 6 MB.

Also, as a pensioner the extra cost is not appealing.

was the quiet line test done from the test socket with a corded phone?  if so any noise is a problem  however if using cordless then a dull hum is often heard and normal

Behaving quite well at present!

When stable the Noise Margin stays stable for hours

When misbehaving the difference can be upto 4dB between good and bad which is enough to reduce the download speed by about 1 MB

The hum/random noise on the phone line may not be connected to adsl and is not the main problem. using a corded phone and is normally perfectly quiet on Quiet Line Test

Have you tried using the test socket with a filter to see if that helps your connection?

your down noise margin is only fluctuating by 0.2db and is normal but more important your speed is not changing. Speed will only change if the hub drops connection and then reconnects

Sods law it has been behaving well since I brought it to your attention and survived overnight

Will keep an eye on it and report if/when it reverts to the dodgy state!

No, I haven't tried a filter yet. I have a Master Socket 5C fitted but will try your suggestion

I removed the Openreach MK4 filter just over an hour ago and fitted my ADSLnation XF1e filter

It gave a slightly better download speed so will leave it for awhile and see how it goes.

I noted that the MK4 filter came away without having to squeeze the sides. Perhaps it is not locking.

The hub went through the night with the XF1e filter without losing sync or changing speed.

At sunset the download noise margin went down to 1dB and carried on download at 6.84Mb. This Hub 6A is very impressive. Today I did a comparison between the XRF1e and the Mk4 filters. The XF1e was marginally better.  The Mk4 filter is not locking on to the 5C socket so the finger of suspicion is that a poor connection was causing my problem. So I will continue using the XF1e.
