I am a newbie to the BT community and generally pretty hopeless with IT but I seem to manage. Until now. The previous BT email version worked for me but the new one is a mess. Why on earth did they change it? Now it's very difficult to use.
Skimming briefly through the list of complaints I can see designing an email service that's easy to use and pleases everyone is an impossible task. Like most people, I imagine, I just want easy and uncomplicated. I don't want fancy bells and whistles that prove the site designers are clever.
When I try to enter an email address in the compose address box the names come up in alphabetical order, not the most used order.
I can't open some emails no matter how hard or how many times I click on them - it always opens the one above. The new symbols used are unexplained, the dots and things - there's no obvious place to go to to get an explanation.
That is the main problem with this email site - there's no list of explanations of how things are - this works like this, this means that, and so on. IN PLAIN ENGLISH! The BT Community is the same - where do I go to get to contribute? I stumbled on this more by luck than judgement.
When I signed up to the BTCommunity I was asked for an 'avatar' - being IT illterate I've no idea what an avatar is or what it's for. I've ben tapping away for nearly 20 years on computers and now BT wants an 'avatar' for me/from me - why? To me it's an empty, meaningless and badly drawn symbol. How confusing and unnecessary!
My greatest apprehension is that if I make the slightest fuss, BT will cut me off. That happened before on one blog where I crticised an orchestra's management for its uncaring and short-sighted attitude towards its audience. My comment was deleted and not published. I think I was even banned from contributing further.
I do have one question but I 've no idea where to post it or how - if I move to another email site (gmail or wherever) can I transfer the emails I want to keep to the new site, or do I have to print them all out? You may think I'm an idiot for wanting to keep emails but I'm writing a book and I need to refer to any communications I have received over the last few years.
Looking at the pages of explanations by the site's designers I really don't have time to go through them - life is too short at my age. Just provide an email site that works as simply as it used to, or provide an extra site for those who want complications and nerdiness. Let us illiterates use something simple and straight forward.
