SCAM Beware - Indian people calling claiming to be from BT

The fact that this thread is so old is exactly what is shocking - BT customers have been scammed in exactly the same way for at least 2.5 years!!! This is not a new issue requiring a recent thread - this is the same old issue!

BT can certainly do something about it - they could locate scammers and report them to local police. There must also be a technology solutions open to somebody like BT.  The question is not whether they can do something but whether they care enough to spend some money on doing something about it!

As I said, it's a worldwide problem. The likes of massive telecoms companies like AT&T, Comcast in the USA won't be sitting back doing nothing.

The scammers use VoIP systems, and spoof the called from number. These numbers don't exist physically, so it's not just a simple matter of locating them at all.

If it really was that easy to stop it, they would be doing so now.

Thanks for your suggestions about the auto lock. It is a good idea but it's not currently offered on this platform.  It's something that we will look to include in the future

Just wow!! After posting about a sophisticated scam in BT's name, in the hope to alert others to the serious damage that could be caused to vulnerable people, this is the response:

1. Apologizers for BT claim that:

a. It is the fault of people who get scammed that this happens to them. 

b. NOTHING at all can be done by a FTSE100 company against some small fraudsters in India. 

c. I should not be allowed to post on threads about this exact same issue if they are too 'old'

2. The BT moderator chooses to completely ignore my comment about the scam and the damage it is undoubtedly causing other people. Instead, they reply to thank the person who told me that I shouldn't be posting on old threats!!!

What might help is if BT themselves did not give cover to the scammers by engaging in similar behaviour themselves. My experience went as follows:
I have an outstanding complaint active against BT (who hasn't?).
BT send me a text alerting me to the fact that they are going to phone me within 5 minutes.
Moments later my mobile rings, "Hello, BT here, its a *very*important*call about your complaint. So I can identify you, please tell me ... [insert list of personal info]".
Me: "No"
BT: "But it's very important, it's about your complaint."
Me: "How do I know you are who you say you are?"
and this is the priceless bit...
BT: "Didn't you see the text from us telling you BT were going to call? It's really important... your personal info please?"
Me: "No. I'll ring you back unless you can prove your identity to me. You rang me, I don't know who you are."
BT: "The text we sent, that proves who we are"
Me: "You are joking, right? Oh, I see. You're not!"
Fruitless. She even said she understood I might think this was a scam, yet seemed to think that pleading the importance of the call was the way to convince me.
Eventually she got the message and hung up.
I phoned back immediately. No recognition from BT that they had in truth just called me. No ability to reconnect me to the supposed caller.
So how do I know that this was in fact BT who were laying the ground for scammers?
During a later call to me that evening on the same complaint, it emerged that the call had been from BT. Difference was that this call was previously scheduled by a named individual who called as scheduled and gave me her name.
