I'm having exactly the same issue.
We originally were with BT Broadband, and signed up for the free talk21 accounts at the time. We still use these regularly. After receiving the email message to change passwords from BT, I dutifully did so. Since then I've been unable to log in (with a few weird caveats).
Note that each talk21 account has a btinternet version too - so my email address, email@example.com , is also firstname.lastname@example.org
Attempting to log in at https://signin1.bt.com/login/emailloginform with the talk21 version leads me to this webpage: https://bt.edit.client.yahoo.com/bt/servicedown?intl=uk&partner=bt-1 stating that the service is down -
