Re: Very slow Internet, but great connection speed!

I seem to have the same problem as the OP - I have apparently OK broadband speed, but unuseably slow download streaming perfromance. I have just done a BTW speed test and got 5.6Mbps D 0.36 U ping 0.00 (?). Speedtest.net says 5.8 D 0.38U ping 36ms. But at the same time I have a 4OD programme attempting to stream, and it is stuttering away/buffering Occassionally (seems if I get lucky) I can do a speedtest and get an indicated 0.2-0.7 D which seems more like it. On the face of it it seems to indicate some kind of intermittent fault but the speed is intolerably slow whether the speedtest reads high or low.

I have been through all the usual hoops with our firends in Mumbai, I am currently ethernet connected direct to the HomeHub 2.0, which in turn is connected to my Type 5 (ADSL filtered) master socket. All internal extensions are disconnected by detaching the faceplate and my one and only phone is connected to the test socket via a filter dongle. So as far as I can tell internal wiring is as good as it can be.

One other observation is that the buffering/stuttering is generally much worse on 4OD when the ads are on, than when the main programme is on. I say generally, as the main programme stutters also, just not as often. The ads seem to be coming through in ~2 sec burst max. I have run Wireshark and the ads are coming apparently from a differnet server from Limelight Networks from the main programme (which is showing up as from a BT 21CN server). Does this imply BT are throttling content not off their own servers? I thought this might be one of the main reasons, but then the main prgramme started being as unwatcheable as the ads so I think that theory is dead.

My firend in Mumbai is going to phone me back in 24hrs to see how things are going and if no better call the technician out, but any other tips in the meantime? How is it going for the OP - does it appear fixed - if so - any idea what was done to fix it?

Re: Very slow Internet, but great connection speed!

I moved your post to start your own to avoid confusing replies with originator or previous post

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results .

Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

Re: Very slow Internet, but great connection speed!

you are on adslmax with the max conenction speed.

your connection time is only 1+ hrs is that due to hub resetting or manual reset?  are you having problems with router dropping connection

can you go back to stats page and 'show detail' and post the errors please

can you post the first stage of btspeedtester.  unfortunately the second diagnostic page is the only one that will show your ip profile which controls your download speed

Re: Very slow Internet, but great connection speed!

Sorry should have been a bit more on the ball with the stats. Yes connection time is only a few hours because of restart whilst working throught the BT Mumbai guys checklist earlier this afternoon. Here are the missing stats (that up CRC errors number looks unfeasibly large?):

ADSL line status

Connection information
Line stateConnected
Connection time0 days, 2:13:35
Downstream8,128 Kbps
Upstream448 Kbps

ADSL settings
VPI/VCI0/38
TypePPPoA
ModulationITU-T G.992.1
Latency typeInterleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up)10.3 dB / 23.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up)14.0 dB / 7.5 dB
Output power (Down/Up)17.8 dBm / 12.0 dBm
Loss of Framing (Local)0
Loss of Signal (Local)0
Loss of Power (Local)0
FEC Errors (Down/Up)133 / 0
CRC Errors (Down/Up)0 / 2147480000
HEC Errors (Down/Up)nil / 0
Error Seconds (Local)0

Latest first stage BT speedtest results D 6.97Mbps U 0.35 ping 54.38. Second stage BTW test ran now and here are the results:

1. Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.

 Download  Speed
 6.97 Mbps

0 Mbps7.15 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 6.97 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.6 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
 Additional Information:
 Your DSL Connection Rate :8.13 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7.15 Mbps

Performance at the moment is OK (streaming BBC iPlayer). But previously, when streaming very stuttery, I have had second satge BTW test results down at the 0.28 Mbps on the bets effort test

Re: Very slow Internet, but great connection speed!

Nothing shown for my exchange. Hopefully my BT friend in Mumbai would have spotted that if there had been.

Here are some earlier results for when performance was slow AND speedtest  showed it slow:Screen Shot 2013-10-13 at 12.25.00.png

Screen Shot 2013-10-13 at 12.26.38.png

By the way, the next test to do after the one above is the so called Tap3 test. But I did not proceed to do that because it requires to change the BT HH login and password, and honestly speaking, I can't remember/don't know the HH password (is it going to be the same as my BT email password? Or my HH admin password? Or my HH wireless key? (unlikely)

Re: Very slow Internet, but great connection speed!

No exchange problems for me shown on any of the 4 checking methods you gave. One of them shows green status for 20CN network for my exchange for the last 4 weeks. All tests being done via ethernet, I've taken wifi out of the equation
