Re-purposing an old Home-Hub 2.0 router as a wi-fi extender

Hi,

 

i am looking to extend my home wi-fi coverage by using a couple of old HH2.0.

 

I am advised that the best way is to use one as an ethernet bridge, then link by ethernet cable to the other which is set up as a dumb access point.

 

Has anyone tried this with HH 2.0 and/or any advice on this?

Just give the hub you are going to use an extender an IP address outside of the DHCP range of the main hub, disable DHCP on it and connect it to the main hub via Ethernet cable LAN port to LAN port. If you are going to use more than one obviously give each a different IP address. Use a different wifi channel on each device to avoid interference. I also prefer to give each device different SSIDs so that it is obvious which device you are connected to.

Hi, thanks for the advice.
The routing of the cable from my original router to the "extender" router is convoluted . I am hoping to locate the first repurposed router at the edge of my wi-fi envelope then to link it to a second repurposed router so that the second one can send/transmit wi-fi on a new channel. Hope that makes sense. Tony

You can't link them via wifi, it has to be Ethernet cable.

Thank you for all the advice.... Sorry for the newbie questions.  it has got me thinking about my acctual needs and the capabilities/functioning of the routers.

I am actually wanting to extend my wi-fi to a single static device ( in my garage where I wish to install a "backup server")

Is it possible to re-purpose a HH2 to boost the receive/transmit capabilities of that one device ( by using the HH2 as the wi-fi device instead of the inbuilt unit)?

No, you can't use the HH2 as a wifi 'receiver'.

If you only want to connect to one device and , just use a pair of powerline adaptors. You can then either connect the device via its Ethernet ports or wifi if you prefer. have a look at https://shop.bt.com/products/bt-mini-wi-fi-home-hotspot-600-kit-084288-BVFF.html
