Really high ping when using desktop and laptop at the same time.

Hi there everyone.  I have already reported this to the engineers and very helpful they were as well.

The problem.

When I use the desktop for online games I usually see a ping of between 30ms and 70ms depending which online game I am playing.

If one of my daughters goes on the laptop then my ping will increase (in game) from anywhere between 200ms and 15,000ms.  Yes I have seen the ping that high!

I am wondering if any of you beautiful people can provide an answer to this please?

I pinged bbc.co.uk while not using the wireless for the laptop and then my daughter accessing the internet (faceboook etc):

When we first got the hub in January we could happily play games and watch videos at the same time.

Thank you in advance for you help.

Re: Really high ping when using desktop and laptop at the same time.

If other user are using your Internet connection, then an increase in response time is normal and to be expected. It really depends on what the laptop was being used for.

Packets of data for gaming applications have no priority over other traffic. So your game data packet will have to wait its turn, when other people are using your Internet connection.

Re: Really high ping when using desktop and laptop at the same time.

Yep, I understand that mate.

My point being is that when we first got the hub in January we could be on the desktop and the laptop at the same time doing whatever without any issues.

This has only been happening for the last few weeks so something is definately amiss.

Re: Really high ping when using desktop and laptop at the same time.

Perhaps the exchange capacity is reaching its maximum on your Virtual Path. What download speed does the BT Speedtester show?

I assume that the desktop is hard wired, and not using wireless?

Yes the desktop is wired.

Re: Really high ping when using desktop and laptop at the same time.

Would this have anything to do with the following?

ADSL Line Status

Connection information
Line state:
Connected
Connection time:
3 days, 19:25:02
Downstream:
8,128 Kbps
Upstream:
448 Kbps

ADSL settings
VPI/VCI:
0/38
Type:
PPPoA
Modulation:
G.992.1 Annex A
Latency type:
Fast
Noise margin (Down/Up):
13.2 dB / 29.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up):
21.0 dB / 12.5 dB
Output power (Down/Up):
19.9 dBm / 11.9 dBm
FEC Events (Down/Up):
0 / 2
CRC Events (Down/Up):
189 / 29
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote):
0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote):
0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote):
0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote):
0
HEC Errors (Down/Up):
205 / 13
Error Seconds (Local/Remote):
0 / 0

What about the latency type?  Should it be interleaved?  Also the noise should be somewhere around 6dB if I have read these forums correctly?  Also what about the HEC Errors?

Thanks

Re: Really high ping when using desktop and laptop at the same time.

interleaving will increase latency fast is normally favoured by gamers your connection speed is the maximum for adslmax (up to 8mb service) a reduction in noise margin in your case would achieve nothing as you are already connecting at the maximum speed possible the HEC's are low for your connection time and nothing to worry about
your down load speed however is low was the speed test carried out on a wired device ?if yes could you try 3 speed tests at different times of day over the next 24 hours to see if exchange capacity is causing any problems

Will do.  First one should be sometime around lunchtime BST.

Re: Really high ping when using desktop and laptop at the same time.

It looks like bad exchange congestion to me, but do the different speed tests requested, and they sholud give the answer.
