Re: Recent online gaming ping spikes when streaming Netflix

Yep, I've got 4 or so months left in my contract and I'll just pay the fees.

Re: Recent online gaming ping spikes when streaming Netflix

Same for me, this was the first time I had an engineer visit, he tested the line, no  faults, which I already knew based on the router statistics.  He didn't have any idea of what to try to change, he tried everything he knew, basically drew a blank. He did say that the problem was beyond the level that he operates, his remit is to find and solve line faults, since there was no fault with the line there was nothing he could do and also affirmed that the engineers that might be able to solve this aren't available to the public.

At least now I can argue there is no fault and it's pointless to keep sending engineers out to test the line...

Re: Recent online gaming ping spikes when streaming Netflix

I've also now had my 4th engineer visit today and despite his best efforts he couldn't give me an explanation either. Nothing wrong with my line to the cabinet or exchange. He does now however agree with me in thinking bt have maybe changed something in their core network to prioritize streaming services, which is beyond the exchange and out of openreach's control.

I'd guarantee they have. Did he say who's control this is in?

Re: Recent online gaming ping spikes when streaming Netflix

From my understanding I would say he believes it's Bt's responsibility and not openreach. This guy has been out to me twice now and tried everything he could think of including phoning colleagues and different departments checking things he cant see and no joy. He seemed genuinely annoyed that he couldn't help.

Re: Recent online gaming ping spikes when streaming Netflix

Yeah, the engineers have been really great with me. However none seem to know what to do.

If they're all saying they cant do it and its BT, I guess were **bleep**ed. Cant wait to change to Virgin, which is so frustrating as BT were perfect for 3 years for me

Re: Recent online gaming ping spikes when streaming Netflix

Unfortunately in the north east of Scotland we dont have the option of virgin. If I had to guess what's causing this I would have to say bt have tried to react to the boom in smart tech and streaming services seen in the last six months or so (Netflix, prime, Amazon echo, Google home, etc) and have enhanced buffering for playback, which I believe has already been suggested. Possibly clumping packets together into larger packets which in turn is causing the latency issue for real time users.

Re: Recent online gaming ping spikes when streaming Netflix

Having just moved over to BT I can see the spike when using their kit.

However I like to use my own kit, I had this same kit in when I moved over, the same user name from previous ISP in my own set up, this issue does not occur!

What does occur and I would expect any other service using the connection increases my latency on both setups.  Although spike not occuring in my own setup, just expected steady increase.

Do you mean it could be the home hub?
