Recommended upgrade from the TD-W9970?

Go to solution

Hi all,

I live in a shared house in London, there are 7 of us living here. Last year I replaced my BThome hub with the TD-W9970 in order to set an upload restriction on my line (any upload would tank the net for everyone connected). The TD-W9970 solved this problem, however this following problem was added instead:

With the BThome hub, despite the uploading issue, everyone in the house could connect to the router fine and didn't experience disconnects or low speed. With the TD-W9970, those connected wirelessly consistently see very poor internet speeds (0.20mbps), and often booted off the network. Sometime's it's okay, othertimes it's not. I have tried using WiFi Analytics to switch to the best channel, and sometimes this helps - but it often doesn't. I've tried disabling the bandwidth restriction entirely to see if that helps, and it doesn't. We weren't experiencing these problems with the BThome hub, and I can only blame the TD-W9970. Could it be because the TD-W9970 is 2.4ghz only? Another housemate complained that he couldn't get signal when in our garden, where as with the Homehub he could.

So my question is, what would be a better router to upgrade to, anyone have any personal recommendations? I am happy to spend a bit of money on this.

As you are only on ADSL, your broadband speed is going to be the limiting factor.

The next model up, has dual band wireless, if that is what you are looking for?

TP-Link AC1200 Wireless Dual Band VDSL/ADSL

It has three external aerials and a faster wireless interface. It also has similar features to the W9970.

Thanks Keith, I've just placed the order for it now. If it doesn't solve the issues we're having I can get a refund so I guess it's worth testing.

Setup process is very similar to the W9970 with a graphical interface. Bandwidth control is implemented slightly different, but has the same effect.

See emulator here  https://emulator.tp-link.com/Archer_VR400(EU)_V2/index.htm

Have you checked that your line connection speed has not deteriorated, as you did have problems with the line disconnecting?
