Router Upgrade from BT SmartHub 2 to a different one

Go to solution

Good evening all BT Community,

I'm thinking about changing my ISP default router to a third-party one, now am I ALLOWED to do this or not?

Can anybody recommend any excellent one please 😊 👌.

You can use any router which is compatible with your connection type.

Yes you can use a different one. Assuming you are on FTTC You need to make sure it is a VDSL Modem/router.

There are a few to choose from so it depends on your individual needs and how much you want to spend.

You would be best to do an Internet search and read the reviews regarding the VDSL Modem /router that are available and once you have a short list post back with the name and model number and I'm sure you will get advice about which one to go for.

Hello both @Keith_Beddoe @gg30340,

Yes I'm on FTTC. I'm willing to spend around about £100 - £200 no more than £200, any recommendations?

Hi 👋 morning 🌄 all,

I forgot to mention that I'm after a excellent VDSL router to replace my BT SmartHub 2 (ISP one) to a third-party VDSL.

If you want a direct replacement for the BT Smarthub, you should be looking for one unit ie a VDSL Modem/router unless you have a preference to have two units. ie a sperate VDSL modem and a separate router.

The TP-Link AC1200 is only a router. It would require an additional VDSL modem so I would say unless you also want to purchase an addition VDSL modem it is not what you want.

The Netgear D7000-200UKS and the Asus DSL AC55U are a VDSL Modem/router so would be suitable for you so it comes down to your preference.

@Anonymous

Forget Netgear as they don't implement BT's version of IPV6 - atleast never did - which may or may not be a concering factor.

Forget the Asus DSL-AC55U but go for the DSL-AC68U which is far better.

The TP-Link modem/routers are a good choice & perhaps @Keith_Beddoe could suggest the best option there as he has personal experience of them.

I am not sure that the TP Link ones support BTs implementation of IPv6. Archer Vr400.

This is one TP Link option https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/dsl-modem-router/archer-vr400/v2/

About £70.

I assume you want dual band wireless?
