Scam Alert! Caller claims to be from BT with a request you download Team Viewer

Hi Everyone,

We have come across scam call which has the potential to trick customers into believing that the caller is from BT.

The caller claims to be from BT and they need access to your device so that they can help you with a problem they have identified.  They then request that you download a program called Team Viewer, which will allow them to access your device remotely.

To convince the customer that the caller is in fact from BT, they direct the customer to BT.com and then ask them to click on the 'Contact BT' at the bottom of the homepage.  They instruct the customer to use the search bar located on the contact us page, and search for 'Team Viewer' and then download this program from the search results.

The search bar on BT's contact page defaults to searching the web.  When customers run a search for Team Viewer they will be given web results, not results from BT's website.  It can be easy for a customer to believe that the Team Viewer download is coming from BT, so the caller must be legitmate.  This call can be quite convincing but this is a scam so please hang up.

If you receive this call or have received this call and the fraudster has taken over your PC remotely, or, bank details have been shared please,

  • Run a virus check on your computer
  • If bank details were given out then contact your bank immediately and change your online banking passwords
  • Report the call through Report a scam call
  • BT Call Protect is a free service that controls and prevents unwanted calls
  • For mobile calls check your app store for call blocking apps

Stay safe everyone and please share this example with your friends and family.
