Scam phone calls pretending to be from BT

My call was fully automated . The recorded message said Internet connection about to stop. Press 1 for help press2 for etc etc. So no opportunity to ask questions . I blocked the number .01768422905 the code is Penrith.

Once upon a time there was a page on the BT site detailing how a genuine BT employee can prove who they are. Sadly that procedure seems to be long forgotten, with the amount of fraud/spam at a far higher level, and is no longer linked to from the BT homepage, even if it still exists (it involved them giving you their employee ID and calling them back via the switchboard, an 0800 number).

It is no good relying on CLI, as the fraudulent calls could more than likely spoof that.

Until there is a reliable way for the caller to prove that they are a genuine BT employee (or genuinely calling on behalf of BT), the only solution is to treat all such calls as attempted fraud.

Had 5 calls yesterday and 4 today,all different numbers with some withheld. said the usual from bt last one was from open reach.Contacted bt security who did not seem interested.This only happens after contact with bt which I had last week over contract so obviously somebody working in a call centre as all voices are indian which is where the call centre is.If it keeps on will change service to Sky

If you get a call ask for a reference number & name and hang up then phone bt customer service report the call and they will confirm that it is a scam .I just did this.
