Separate phone and broadband cable extensions? Is there an easier way?

Hi,

This is my first post, I was thinking of doing some work in the house, but thought I should 'sense check' it first, as it may be overengineered.

Setup

We have phone and superfast broadband provided by BT (about 15-20 Mbps).

Broadband is fibre to the cabinet, coming into a NTE5c master socket in the study with a MK4 face plate.

Currently, we have a BT modem router connected to the master providing ethernet for the computer in the study, wifi for the rest of the house and a wireless phone base station plugged into the phone socket of the MK4.

I would like to move the phone into the hall as we don't pass through the study regularly and see if there are any messages on the answer machine, and in the study the router and phone base station have to be very close to each other, which I think may interfere with the signals on 2.4 ghz band.

Proposal

The computer in the study needs the very best and most stable connection available, because of some of the network senstive programmes we use on it, so I am reluctant to move the modem router.

So I intended to run an extension from the master to the hall using 4 pair or cat 5e cable for the phone.

However, the wifi in some parts of the house is not great because the study is on one side of the house, so ideally we would have a booster/access point as well (connected via cat 5e cable to the modem router), likely in the hall (not too close to the phone).

Does this mean I would have to run two separate extensions to the hall: one from the router for the access point/extender, and another for the phone? Seems, slighly ridiculous.

(I am aware I could use powerline adapter for ethernet to hall, however, I will already be running cable to the hall for the phone)

You can either call up BT and get a Socket move engineer who can relocate the master socket for you for a charge of around 130 GBP.

I would recommend if you're already on Infinity, you can subscribe to complete wi-fi package and then get a wireless guarantee all round the house as you can get free wireless boosters to support you. 

Running a cable all throughout the house might not look good and moreover, if you're looking into getting some extension sockets and if that doesn't work out in future, you might get charged if you don't check the master socket and call out an engineer to check.

With Complete Wifi package, yes, you might have to pay a bit more each month but you can be rest assured the broadband issues won't bother you.

Thanks for your reply, but I really need the master socket to be in the study so the computer there gets the very best wired connection possible. If the master was moved I would have to run ethernet cable to the study anyway, which doesn't solve the problem.

If you require the master in the study and a wireless access point and phone in the hall, your only realistic option is Cat5E Ethernet for the WAP and a separate 2 wire cable for the phone.

That's what I thought, it just does require running two cables.

I would be interested to hear if anyone has any 'outside the box' thinking solutions to my problem?
