Silly ping every evening - Any ideas?

Hi guys,

For some reason in the past couple of months I have been receiving a silly ping every evening (Around 160ms). The exchange MSAN (2nd hop) seems to be getting the same problem (I still have a 7-10ms ping when the ping is big) but the 4th hop is the one which is going very high and most hops after. I am not downloading or uploading anything.

I wouldn't mind for normal web browsing but when gaming I am constantly being kicked on servers which are not hosted in the UK because my ping is too high and is very annoying.

Does anyone know what is going on and how to fix it? I've had a ThinkBroadband Ping Meter going for a while for the exchanges' IP and it is showing the same pattern as the ping I am receiving on my connection. Here is a snapshot showing the period when the problem was occuring:

What can I do? Here is a tracert:

Re: Silly ping every evening - Any ideas?

Hi Chris,

It looks like there could be congestion on the network but could you post the following details for me please first of all:

- router stats (including errors) around mid-afternoon when the connection is fine, then the router stats at around 8pm when the problem looks to be at its worst

- results from the full BT Speedtest (www.speedtest.btwholesale.com) at the same time periods as above

Once we have this info we might be in a better position to make a decision on what exactly needs to be done.

Re: Silly ping every evening - Any ideas?

Hi Dean, Thanks for your response.

Here are the router stats taken just now (The graph at ThinkBroadband is currently peaking - See 2nd screenshot):

Line stateConnected
Connection time0 days, 20:33:13
Downstream21,899 Kbps
Upstream1,208 Kbps

ADSL settings
VPI/VCI0/38
TypePPPoA
ModulationITU-T G.992.5
Latency typeInterleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up)3.1 dB / 5.8 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up)16.0 dB / 8.5 dB
Output power (Down/Up)0.0 dBm / 12.3 dBm
Loss of Framing (Local)11
Loss of Signal (Local)1
Loss of Power (Local)0
FEC Errors (Down/Up)0 / 4294967264
CRC Errors (Down/Up)215 / 2147480000
HEC Errors (Down/Up)nil / 0
Error Seconds (Local)199

The low connection time is due to problems I'm having with my Billion Router so I've put the HomeHub on the line for the time being. I believe my Hub is slightly dodgy due to its age as it shows Loss of stats being larger than one, whereas my 7800N never drops out. It shouldn't affect the delay as it isn't between my home and the exchange according to the tracert.

My Broadband Ping - Nether Stowey Exchange

Weirdly enough my speeds seem normal, but the delay is definitely evident when using Real Time Applications such as games and Skype.

Here are the results from a speedtest:

Initial Test (Including ping) - 9pm:

st1.png

Further diagnostics - 9pm:

st1fd.png

Looks like the problem resides in the BT Wholesale Network if the speedtester is located within it which would make sense according to the tracert.

I'll see if I can get you the same details tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks for your help,

Chris

Re: Silly ping every evening - Any ideas?

Sorry for the delay getting the stats, I have been overly busy today.

Here are the stats from the HomeHub:

Line stateConnected
Connection time1 day, 17:26:39
Downstream21,899 Kbps
Upstream1,208 Kbps

ADSL settings
VPI/VCI0/38
TypePPPoA
ModulationITU-T G.992.5
Latency typeInterleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up)2.3 dB / 6.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up)16.0 dB / 8.5 dB
Output power (Down/Up)0.0 dBm / 12.3 dBm
Loss of Framing (Local)11
Loss of Signal (Local)1
Loss of Power (Local)0
FEC Errors (Down/Up)0 / 4294967264
CRC Errors (Down/Up)562 / 2147480000
HEC Errors (Down/Up)nil / 0
Error Seconds (Local)525

If you are wondering about the SNR, it seems to improve as it gets later.

Speedtests this afternoon (Simple first):

std1.png

Ping is fine, congestion doesn't appear to have started yet.

Further Diagnostics:

std2.png

Seems the upload last night in the high ping period was lower than it should be.

Here is a graph showing the current ping to the exchange, which is stable for the moment but will probably increase later:

Edit: For some reason the wrong graph was generated. See the graph at around half 5pm for when these Speedtests were taken:

My Broadband Ping - Nether Stowey Exchange

Any idea what could be causing the massive spike in latency during the mid evening which is ruining my experience with Real Time Applications?

Must be a big capacity issue somewhere because it's almost completely smooth all day and then everything goes south when it comes to around half 7.

Thanks again for your help

Re: Silly ping every evening - Any ideas?

Hi Chris6273,

Thanks for supplying the info that Dean had requested.  I think we need to run a few checks from our end which will hopefully shed some light on where the problem may lie.

Please drop me an email via the 'Contact Us' link in my profile. (click on my name and you will find the link under the "about me" section). Include your BT account details and the link to this thread.

Cheers

Sean
