Sloooow BB - Engineer Visited - Gone again..

Consistently had 4meg speeds until last Wednesday when the homehub suddenly kept dropping out.  Dropped down to 768kbps and no BT Vision (Error V04).  Engineer came today, re-set the profile which apparently had a 1mbps cap on it (no-one knows why) and all was well.

About 9 o'clock my connection suddenly dropped again and when it re-synched the speed was back down to 1mbps.  And still no access to BT Vision.

Router stats (note I re-set the hub in frustration - better that than being thrown through the window):-

I ran speedtester which basically says that my profile is 1151kbps and so there is no problem.  Not happy to say the least.  Been without Vision for nearly a week now.  Why the heck does the profile drop instantly but then take forever to recover?  And why should it drop straight for 4mbps to 1mbps?  What about the 2 and 3 inbetween??

My BT Vision contract runs out in October but if BT can't supply the necessary broadband then I don't see why I should keep paying.  The broadband has been running without issue for the last three and a half years and the BT Vision has been great for the last 18 months.  What the **bleep** has changed???

Re: Sloooow BB - Engineer Visited - Gone again..

Forgot to mention that I have one of those wonderful external grey boxes that does not have a test socket. That was fun trying to explain to india. My house is only a few years old.

Re: Sloooow BB - Engineer Visited - Gone again..

welcome to the forum

have you tried the quiet line test to make sure no noise on your line?  if not dial 17070 option 2 and best done with corded phone  if cordless then dull hum normal

are you connected to the first socket in your home here the wires enter from your outside master?  is the orange bellwire disconnected from terminal 3?

your profile is 88.2% of your connection speed so the higher your connection speed the higher your profile and it reflect immediately any change in your connection speed - no longer have to wait the 3 days for change

Re: Sloooow BB - Engineer Visited - Gone again..

Thanks for the quick response.

Yes, I tried the quiet line test on the first socket into the house with a wired phone.  It was silent with no indication of any noise.

The hub is connected in a different room.  The engineer made no mention that this would cause any problems (tried it in the first socket when the problems first appeared - made no difference).

There are only two wires connected in the sockets (I was there when the builders electrician actually wired them up - a long story Smiley Happy).

What is frustrating is that it was a rock solid 4meg from when the engineer left at 12:00pm right up until 9pm and then it just plummeted to 1meg rendering BT Vision completely pointless... Smiley Sad

Re: Sloooow BB - Engineer Visited - Gone again..

your noise margin is slightly high at 8.1dB normal default is 6dB once you have 3 days stable connection you can get the forum mods to reset your noise margin that will improve your speed connecting to the first / master socket is always the best as it eliminates any problems with internal wiring

Re: Sloooow BB - Engineer Visited - Gone again..

I'm a bit confused.  From what I've read, if there is noise on the line then DLM reduces the speed until it can remain stable.  If this occurs then the profile of the line is reduced accordingly (hence my sudden unexplained drop to 1mbps).  I thought that, until the line was stable for three days or so the profile would not increase.

Are you saying that, now, the profile should just increase when the line noise is reduced and a more reliable connection can be maintained?

Or am I barking up the wrong tree? 🙂

Re: Sloooow BB - Engineer Visited - Gone again..

you are now on the new profile system of 88.2% of connection speed and this changes immediately - no more 3 day wait

Re: Sloooow BB - Engineer Visited - Gone again..

Sorry, last post was in response to imjolly. 🙂

Also, realised that there is a dodgy street light less than ten metres from my house. Could it be this going on and off at random times affecting the line?

it certainly could be a cause of interference

Re: Sloooow BB - Engineer Visited - Gone again..

Reset the hub when I got back from work tonight about 5pm and, much to my surprise, it resynched at 4.5mbps.  Excellent.

But by 9pm it had resynched down to 3.5, then a few minutes later 2.5 then 1mbps.  I sat and watched it over the space of ten minutes plummet from 4.5 to 1mbps.  What the heck could be causing it?

Been without BT vision for over a week now and I am not happy (to say nothing of Mrs Crashed).  I wouldn't be so bothered but I'm paying for Vision and I can't use the freakin thing. Smiley Mad
