Slow Download Speed

Go to solution

Hi, I had BT broadband activated last Tuesday and have been very dissapointed with the speed I have been getting. The first 10 days have now passed and I have seen no improvement.

When I input my phone number on the BT site they say I can achieve:

2Mb *

Estimate download speed

2Mb-7.5Mb

Download speed range

But my download speed is nowhere near this.

I have a grey openworld box outside the property (built 2011) and can't find a master socket inside the property.

Here are my test results:

ADSL Line Status

Connection Information

Line state:           Connected

Connection time:            0 days, 19:12:03

Downstream:    704 Kbps

Upstream:           448 Kbps

ADSL Settings

VPI/VCI:               0/38

Type:     PPPoA

Modulation:       G.992.1 Annex A

Latency type:     Interleaved

Noise margin (Down/Up):             6.4 dB / 10.0 dB

Line attenuation (Down/Up):       66.2 dB / 31.5 dB

Output power (Down/Up):           14.3 dBm / 12.5 dBm

FEC Events (Down/Up):               23261 / 548

CRC Events (Down/Up):                195 / 26

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote):              0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote):                 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote):               0 / 0

HEC Events (Down/Up):                456 / 11

Error Seconds (Local/Remote):           125 / 28

BT PERFORMANCE TEST

Download: 0.66mbps

Upload: 0.39mbps

Ping latency ms : 46.25

BT Performance test was done through ethernet cable.

Anything which could be causing this? I know it is not my laptop, as i was achieving speeds 10x faster with Sky last month (previous property).

Many Thanks

if you have the outside box you will not have a master socket the first socket will be the one nearest the point of cable entry into the house from your attenuation you are on a very long line and are unlikely to achieve a fast connection i would expect with a perfect line approx 1.4 mb as your noise margin is also at its default setting i can see no possible room for any improvement

Re: Slow Download Speed

Thanks for your help. So it won't be worth calling BT customer services?

I assume it would be a similar speed for all ISP around here then?

Last question, they say I can upgrade to BT infinity with speeds of

49.1Mb
Download speed

10.9Mb
Upload speed

Am i likely to achieve any where near these speeds?

Thanks

Re: Slow Download Speed

correct you would get the same from any ISP as to infinity in most cases the speed shown is fairly conservative in most cases it can be higher than quoted for example i as quoted 66 -20 and on installation got 77 -20 and that speed has hardly varied since March 2012 once install it is normally very stable i would suggest upgrading to the service
