Carry on telling your self that. I am now connected again using MY connection which is using PPPoE.

 

Just an explanation found else where:

 

PPPoE: See it like this: your (ADSL) device is a simple modem, like the old RTC days. It's just converting information from one type of physical stream - the phone line - to another one - ATM paquets over Ethernet. The next device in chain (your pFsense box) handles the login and other connection stuff.

PPPoA: Your modem is doing the PPPoE stuff and the login etc. This modem becomes something more: it will be a router with one or more LAN and-points (some of them have even a switch integrated). It will be a (the !) gateway for your network, often with NAT, DHCP etc. Your pFsense will be just a router-behind-a-router.
This will work well - if you keep in mind that a "PPPoA mode" doesn't really exist for pFsense. Its WAN network card must be activated as a static (or DHCP) local LAN IP - like 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.... (Please, let this wan be different as your real LAN IP's, 'behind' the pFsense box).
Things are getting nice if you want to pinhole your routers (for incoming connections’): you have to deal with them twice!!
A nice solution is the Outbound Natting - you will be having access to your PPPoA modem/router by its telnet and/or web interface - you gona need this access for changing settings (password, DHCP server, Firewall, NAT etc).

 

Speed tester results:

 

 Download speedachieved during the test was - 3.23 Mbps

 For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 1.2 Mbps-4 Mbps.

 IP Profile for your line is - 3.56 Mbps

 

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.58Mbps

 Additional Information:

 Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.45 Mbps

from reading kitz it appears BE/O2 used pppoE whereas as john46 has said BT uses pppoA

The issue still remains that every now and then the BT network drops and authentication fails, or the line will consistantly resync over and over.

 

My modem effectively is converting the PPPoE information to PPPoA, although it doesn't matter as its all going via ATM anyway.

I am assuming that your ISP is BT, and not Plusnet?

Indeed BT as its the only option on my exchange, counting out all the other ISPs that use BT Wholesale so its BT or BT or BT in otherwords.

 

I'm a technical person btw if you hadn't already gathered. I work in IT for a living.

You are quite right about PPPoE if your modem is bridging the ATM to the Ethernet, it should work. But I do remember people posting issues in the past.

 

You can always prove whether its ISP related, by temporarily changing the PPPoE login to

bt_test@startup_domain.

 

You should get the BT Wholesale message telling you your details are wrong, at least it will prove whether its an issue at your end, or a problem with BT ISP radius servers.

On the BT network authentication is done over the L2P tunnel normally using pppoa (over atm), although pppoe (over ethernet) should work technically .... but what may be happening is because the BT network is so expansive and everything in the network architecture is queued ... there are time limits imposed, bit like normal timeouts on a webserver .... and because if when your connection attempts to authenticate it's not using the "normal" connection protocol, the dslam is questioning the connection with the router, as it's holding its connection for your line with the authentication server ... and if that server is very busy, it will shunt you back to the end of the queue ... until the dslam is happy to connect .... or conversely, the authentication server has give up and timed out on the dslam's attempt on your account. At which point it won't connect until the authentication server threshold connection time is satisfied by both dslam and itself.
