Slow speed availability in new (old) house - options?

Go to solution

Hi BT community!

I've found out there's a high chance I'm moving house early next year. The new house is nearby but on a different exchange. It's a very old building in quite a rural area between villages. The speed estimates are horribly bad and it doesn't seem to have a fibre option available.

I've checked a few properties a mile down the road further away from the exchange, and they're offered 40Mb+ fibre whereas this property is offered 2.5Mb ADSL.

I know that since March you now have a legal right to request a better connection if you receive below 10Mb/1Mb but I don't know what BT actually offer you if you take this route. I really need a stable, low latency connection so any sort of wireless offering isn't something I could use.

I'm aware that there's also a gigabit broadband government voucher scheme active in my area but I have absolutely no idea where I try to take advantage of this, if I can, or if this is even something fulfilled by BT.

If I'm not living in this property at the moment is it even possible to have any sort of upgrade arranged before moving in? I'm reading that things like this could take months to be installed. If this is the case I would have to go months without being able to work from home which really is not an option for me.

Sorry for the information bombardment, I'm just panicking that this could be extremely bad for my small business.

Thank you in advance!

@springett

As you are a business customer, you need to post on the BT Business forum, as this is the residential one.

https://business.forums.bt.com/

BT Business do have many connectivity options which are not available to residential customers.

You probably need to discuss your options with BT Business Sales as soon as you can, as infrastructure changes may be needed.

Thanks.

bear in mind the 10mb minimum connection speed also includes internet speed using your mobile network

Your first post said "Sorry for the information bombardment, I'm just panicking that this could be extremely bad for my small business."

If that is the case, then you need to look at the BT Business options, as business usage is not covered on a residential account.

BT Business offer fibre on demand, cost varies depending on how far you are from a fibre node.

I understand that, but that is not what I was asking. I'm not interested in business broadband and my business is extremely small, something I do from home for fun. Not something I make enough money from in the slightest to be paying for business broadband.

This is only in regards to residential internet for things such as someone watching Netflix while someone else can play online video games without disturbances.

Thanks

enter the property address and post results  not as accurate as a phone number but a good guide
