Slow speed availability in new (old) house - options?

3.5Mbs should be fine for most web and email usage. You should also be able to get an SD video stream. You may even get a slightly faster connection than estimated.

Not quite as simple as finding another house 😄. I know what 3.5 can do, and more importantly I know exactly what it can't do. We struggle in my current property with a 15Mb connection between 4 people, as Netflix rips the bandwidth apart so if anyone is watching it constantly spikes the latency for anyone else. 3.5Mb would be an absolute impossibility for my household. We had faster speeds than that in 2005.

4G coverage is exceptionally appalling around the area too.

Is there no way of requesting a cabinet swap? The one in the other direction is a little over 1km away and a lot closer than the one the property is currently connected to.

That would involve completely re-arranging the local distribution network, not going to happen I'm afraid.

Something slightly unrelated that's been confusing me - the house I previously lived in was offered 4Mb while I lived there. Shortly after I moved out BT were offering 150Mb there, I've just checked again and now it's offered 900Mb-1Gb. This house is on a farm down a country lane with a total of 4 properties there, no other civilisation is within a mile or two in any direction.

How does something like this happen? Surely someone somewhere has paid for that installation as I don't see why BT would have any reason to do that, and if that is the case how do I go about doing the same thing?

the decision to connect you to FTTP or FTTC or not at all is nothing to do with BT retail and is a decision made by openreach
