Smart Hub 2 & WiFi Disc Location

Hi, I upgraded and received my Smart Hub 2 which is fantastic. Solid wifi unlike my Smart Hub 1.

BT are sending me the wifi disc too that can go with it. I seem to have wifi all over my house, however only get 1/4 of my speed in the conservatory, which is good enough, however where is it advised to put the wifi disc?

As the wifi disc is a seperate device, won't my phone keep hopping from the smart hub 2 to the disc as I move round the cause, causing a brief wifi dsisconnection?

If you want good reception in the conservatory it’s best to put the disk near to the entrance. It’s better not to put it inside the conservatory due to the wide temperature fluctuations.

If your mobile has a signal strength application you can check signal strength before installing the disk (and also after).

Your device  connection will probably not hop between hub and disk, around the house if, as you say, the hub signal is good.

As the smart hub 2 and the disk form a basic wifi mesh, then your devices should not hop between the home hub and the disc, as they both share the same SSID, and the software will route the data to the connecting device, from the the best path.

The app should give you some idea where to place the disc.

Thanks, so if I get say 35mb in the conservatatory and I normally get 60mb in most other areas, putting the disc outside the conservatory would mean I get close to my 60mb in the conservatory?

Is that kind of how it works?

You should get something similar to that speed, provided the disc is correctly positioned.

The problem is that with a two node wireless mesh, there is only one possible path between the nodes, so you need to have a reasonable good quality signal.

With  three nodes, each node has two possible signal paths, so you tend to get a better speed, as the data packets have more routes, but the positioning of the discs are more critical.

So since installing my disc today, my speed has dropped from 60mb to 35mb all round the house?

My phone keeps disconnecting and reconnecting depending on which WiFi location I'm closer to?

I do not know much about this product, so you may have to wait for a reply from one of the device experts, but I think you have to leave it a few days to stabilise.

I only have a 10Mb ADSL connection and use a Tenda Nova MW3 mesh system with three discs, and I get the same speed whichever part of the mesh I connect to.

I am not sure how the BT Wifi discs work.

Try to access the hub manager. The best connection is from a Windows Pc.

Turn off smart setup.

Set the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz to fixed channels.  E.g. Ch 6 for 2.4 and ch 32 for 5 GHz.

For your phone, go to settings- wi-fi and forget your connection. Go close to the wi-fi disk and reconnect using the wireless password.

(There’s a Windows application which may help you to choose respective wi-fi channels if there is congestion.)

It’s important to fix the channels, and not let auto select them, but you may find that you have to decide which channels to set yourself.

I've just chosen the channels to use. How do I force it to stay on the channel I select? i.e. is there a setting to turn off smart wifi or something?
