Speed dropped from 16mb to 4mb - HELP!

Hello

Last night at about 6-7pm I cant remember the exact time my broadband reset itself (orange light) but I thought nothing of it as it just came back on again but then about an hour later it went off again and I noticed web pages were loading slower than usual but I thought it was my computer acting up as it tends to do sometimes (shes very moody).

Annnyway my broadband went off for a 3rd time a few hours later so I decided to investigate by both checking the speed on my router and online speed tests and was shocked to see that my speed had dropped to 4mb!!!.  I have had a consistant connection speed of 16mb (give or take a few kb) for atleast 8 months and now suddenly its dropped for no apparent reason.

Also in the bt speed test it showed this

sshot-163.png

The estimated speed is correct for my line and it has been 18mb for atleast 8 months with an actual speed of around 16mb.

I then manually reset my router and did the bt test again and got this

sshot-164.png

Notice it now says my estimated speed is 5mb.  Whats that about????

I was shocked by that result so I disconnected my router completely for a few minutes and turned it back again but still my speed was 4mb and ive now reset it several times and each time my speed has remained at 4mb but my estimated speed keeps fluctuating between 18mb and 5mb.

My actual speed should be 16mb and estimated should be 18mb..whats going on???

Here are my hub stats:

Line stateConnected
Connection time0 days, 0:02:33
Downstream4,480 Kbps
Upstream745 Kbps

ADSL settings

FEC Errors (Down/Up)243830 / 0
CRC Errors (Down/Up)350 / N/A
HEC Errors (Down/Up)N/A / 7
Error Seconds (Local)10
Nothing in my equipment, settings, setup, cables have changed everything has remained the same and its all working fine I checked and I have tried with a filter and direct in the master/test socket.
Please please pleeeeeeaaaase help 😞

Re: Speed dropped from 16mb to 4mb - HELP!

Hi Welcome to the forums

Here are some help pages done by CL Keith http://www.btinternet.com/~cbeddoe/speed/Speed.html

the speedtest you posted  is not an actual speedtest  please run the one below

 speedtester.bt.com

Have you tried connecting to the test socket at the rear of the master socket  Test Socket.jpg

Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

Yes ive done all that equipment stuff im no stranger to that trust me lol.

I actually did run that test aswell a few times but it just says the same thing really,  I just ran it again and this is the result:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 3.61 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 1.2 Mbps-4 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 3.95 Mbps

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.6Mbps
 Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps

Re: Speed dropped from 16mb to 4mb - HELP!

you may have tried "All that equipment stuff " however faults can develop it would help us to advise you more if you connected to the test socket and repost your hub stats so we can compare your previous results there have been posts recently where the faceplates have developed faults and caused speed problems also filters can fail over time

Re: Speed dropped from 16mb to 4mb - HELP!

if you are in the test socket, tried new filters and quiet line test is ok then you need mod assistance

contact mods

can take up to 3 working days for mods to contact you

Re: Speed dropped from 16mb to 4mb - HELP!

Hmm Smiley Surprised

I think I found the problem....my phone is not working!.

It was working last night but its not anymore its completely dead with no dial tone and ive tried with filter, in main socket and in test socket and I have no dial tone...but my internet is obviously still working even though its dropped to 4mb which I now see that its probably due to the fact my phone isnt working 😕  ...but if my phone isnt working how come broadband is still working?

So I may have identified the problem but now I have a new problem..how can I contact BT to let them know somethings gone caput without a phone?..is there online support I can use?

Im really confused now.

Re: Speed dropped from 16mb to 4mb - HELP!

broadband can still operate although at reduced performance with one wire in the pair only connected that is why you have Broadband but no voice connection
