Speed increase has also increased my ping

I'm not sure if anyone has had this issue in the past, but about two weeks ago my Infinity 2 speed jumped from around 55Mb/s to 70Mb/s for no apparent reason.

This probably sounds like a good thing, but along with the 15Mb/s speed increase, I got a ~20-30ms ping increase too, and to be honest, when playing games, I'd rather the lower speed with the better ping. Even my previous ADSL connection with Sky had better pings to servers than I do now.

Feels like I've spoken to nearly everyone on the BT support desk and nobody is able to give me an answer on why this has happened. They have also had my IP Profile reset, but that still hasn't made any difference. I have friends on the same exchange that still get a perfectly low ping, so I'm sure something must be up with my line.

One person I spoke to did say that the high speed is probably making my line unstable, causing the ping increase, but the last support guy seems to disagree and was constantly telling me it would fix itself over time.

Everything in the house is gigabit ethernet, and I have tried plugging my laptop directly into the HomeHub but the high ping still exists, so it can't be anything internally causing the issue.

Has anyone here had a similar issue, or is able to point me in the right direction?

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

BT probably changed your routing at some point; maybe it now goes via Sheffield?  Though an increase of that much seems to be more than a routing problem.

What were the before and after ping rates?

Were these command line ping such as 'ping bbc.co.uk', or were they from some other source?

Try the command 'tracert bbc.co.uk' and post the result.

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

I use speedtest.net for most ping / speed tests, Conventry and Maidenhead being the servers I used to get 15-17ms ping from. I also use a program called MetaPing, which graphs ping over time. My ping now varies from 28ms to 40ms, with the odd 70-80ms spike, and with the added overhead of games, you start to notice it while playing.

Speed with the low ping was at 55-57Mb/s down and 16Mb/s up, and with the higher ping 71Mb/s down and 14-16Mb/s up.

Here is ping test just taken to bbc.co.uk:

Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.241.131] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=241
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=241
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=241
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=241

And here is the trace route taken right after the ping test:

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.241.131] over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms BTHomeHub.home [192.168.1.254]
  2 12 ms 12 ms 12 ms 217.32.145.2

 10 28 ms 33 ms 26 ms 194.74.65.42
 11 * * * Request timed out.
 12 27 ms 26 ms 24 ms ae1.er01.rbsov.bbc.co.uk [132.185.254.46]
 13 29 ms 27 ms 26 ms 132.185.255.60
 14 28 ms 27 ms 28 ms 212.58.241.131

Trace complete.

I know it doesn't look like the biggest increase in the world, but when you go by how much it costs, and the fact that two weeks ago everything was working as it should have, its just frustrating.

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

Well, I went from Sky ADSL to BT Fibre (Infinity 2) on the 21st of June, and it had been fine until the 28th of July, which is when I experienced the higher speed along with higher pings.

Surely a month was enough time for it to figure out that slower speed with a low ping was the better option?

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

Surely a month was enough time for it to figure out that slower speed with a low ping was the better option?  As long as the ping is not too long (what is too long?), most people prefer higher speeds and higher pings.  Unfortunately, Openreach FTTC only gives very crude choice over the speed/latency/reliability tradeoff, and BT does not even pass that choice on to the end user.

It seems they have made the wrong decision for you.  I don't know of anything that can be done to change that.

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

Where are you based? You may have interleave added to the line due to the speed increase however being at 12ms first hop this would only be 8ms. The jump from hop 7-8 looks very large, have you tried refreshing the session to try and change routing?

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

I'm in Haverhill, Suffolk. (CB9)

If by refreshing the session you mean restarting / resetting the HomeHub / modem, or clicking Disconnect in the HomeHub and connecting again, then yea, I've tried this several times. Sometimes I'm lucky and get a steady ping of 26 to bbc.co.uk, but it is very rare.

Something else that happens quite often now is that when I get a steady lowish ping, the HomeHub will drop the connection after a while, and come back with a ping of 30-35 to bbc.co.uk. Sometimes it will come back with a "BT Wholesale" page, which requires me to reboot the lot to get it working again.

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

Okay, so after about a week of having a decent average ping of 16ms to bbc.co.uk, I've woken up this morning and I'm backto 27-30ms...

Restarting the HomeHub and the modem don't seem to change anything at all. I've never had so many issues with an internet connection that I am having with BT Infinity...

Here is a trace route if it helps: http://pastie.org/private/tfajiyynhwgbqsmsi6wxw
