Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

My ping to bbc seems to have settled at 20ms or very close.  This is the fastest it has ever been.  My tracert is similar to yours, except that I have a 5ms advantage from the first hop that continues through.  I guess DLM has probably put mile interleaving on your line.

The large jump seems to be between

7 12 ms 12 ms 12 ms acc2-10GigE-10-3-0.sf.21cn-ipp.bt.net [109.159.251.225]
8 22 ms 23 ms 23 ms core2-te0-2-4-0.ealing.ukcore.bt.net [109.159.251.143]

and an equivalent jump for you.  I guess the .sf. in the first of those indicates Sheffield.  Others have said (and I have copied them before) that it is BT's keenness to route from the south to London via Sheffield that gives rise to some unexpectedly high pings.  Unfortunately I don't think there is anything much to do about it.

Don't restart the modem at all often, that just upsets DLM.  Restarting the router will give you a new connection and a new route if you are lucky.

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

Here is a trace route from when the ping was okay: http://pastie.org/private/c4vhebs7jeuo8sqbtkq5g

Although you say not to restart the modem, this is the only thing that, if I restart, changes the ping occasionally.

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

This happens the higher i sync at, figured interleaving may be applied more due to increases errors on the line.

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

yeah looks like interleaving coming on
did you restart the modem when interleaving came on or did it come on without a restart?

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

It happened over night. Everything was fine last night, and I woke up this morning to the high pings. This is exactly how it happened before, and I was stuck with it for 3 weeks...

I then restarted everything a couple of times as this is what I've been told to do by the BT support guys, but it never seems to change anything.

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

i suppose restarting was worth a try but it sounds like it should go back to fastpath on its own
its very irritating that openreach wont allow a user to force fastpath on but they want to protect there network

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

So I'm just stuck with the high ping until the network decides I should be put back on the faster route? That kind of sucks...

What I still don't understand is that I know people in the same area that have Infinity 2 and they never have any of the issues I've been getting, it doesn't really make much sense.

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

I would say just leave it connected for a while, then possibly restart the modem a week or two later.

Re: Speed increase has also increased my ping

its very irritating that openreach wont allow a user to force fastpath on but they want to protect there network  Very true.  or ....

I'm not sure whether the issues that DLM prevents (higher error rates, unstable line) seriously impact other users of the network.  Attempts to overegg a line with fastpath and low snr clearly give problems.  Eventually the errors and retransmissions would mean lower speeds, less predictable response, and more disconnections.  But, up to a certain point many people (especially gamers) would be more than happy to accept these problems if they were allowed to.

Unfortunately, many people would jump at the risk, but then complain bitterly about the consequences.

So, back to my question, would allowing this impact the network overall and thus the other users?  Maybe Openreach aren't protecting their network, but they are protecting their service people and the service people of the ISPs that use them, and also the reputation of FTTC.  And maybe they are overdoing it, so that actually both service and reputation suffer?
