Speed keeps slowing to a crawl

I'm having issues with my broadband speed slowing right down.

Last week there seemed to be some general broadband issue so I  put it down to that, but last night and this morning I'm getting 0.2mb download speeds on a 5mb line.

IP Profile is fine according to BT Speedtest - 5mb so its not that.

ADSL stats below? Is there anything in there that could be causing issues?

Re: Speed keeps slowing to a crawl

Which type of master socket do you have and where have you connected the home hub to?

One of these

Re: Speed keeps slowing to a crawl

It's most likely to be exchange congestion. There isn't much that you can do apart from hope that the congestion decreases or if it gets worse that Openreach will add capacity, although this is unlikely.

If you have a test socket (you will if you have a master socket that looks like the first or third image that was in the previous reply) you could try the speed test in there, but I doubt it will make any difference because your stats look very good.

Could you also run a speed test from speedtest.net or speedtest.bbmax.co.uk and post the results you get.

hi capacity increases are carried out at regular intervals  so it is not unlikely also the posters stats  show  very high errors which will have a serious affect on the throughput of the connection

Re: Speed keeps slowing to a crawl

YOU'RE WRONG!!!!!!!! 1. The OP said the speed issue was bad last night. Since they have been connected for 7 days, the problem is unlikely to be to do with errors, unless there was a sudden burst. That is why I asked the OP to run a speed test to see what the speed is like now.

2. Capacity upgrades are not carried out very often, unless they are needed (e.g. no users can get speeds over 1Mb/s). For example, the Poplar exchange has struggled with slow speeds for a couple of years now due to low capacity, BT have not added more capacity.

Re: Speed keeps slowing to a crawl

Sorry - hadn't replied to this since creating the post as the problem had gone away and I forgot about the thread.

However - I've now had the same issue with very slow speed two evenings this week (but it is then fine the next day) and this morning my broadband is barely useable - can barely cope with a youtube video.

Speedtest this morning is

1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.

Download Speed
0.17 Mbps

0 Mbps 7.15 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 0.17 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 5.61 Mbps

2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.

Upload Speed
0.26 Mbps

0 Mbps 0.83 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 0.26Mbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 0.83 Mbps

Edit: Master Socket is the top one from first reply.

Re: Speed keeps slowing to a crawl

No problems in my area.

Speeds went back up during the day yesterday, but this morning it is even worse than yesterday.

I can't really make sense of it

Re: Speed keeps slowing to a crawl

Haven't been about much this week - but problems still ongoing.  These are stats as of now - once again slowed to a crawl despite being fine earlier.

Speedtester is currently playing up and won't give me the results - but every time I have checke it IP profile has been fine (at least 4 meg).

Using an alternate speedtest I'm getting 0.1 Mbps down and 0.3 Mbps up. A podcast from the BBC site is downloading at a pathetic 8 kB/S at the moment - over an hour estimate for a 37mb file.
