Speedtest Discrepancy !!

Why when I run speedtest on the BT website show a DL speed of 70mbps, but when I run a Speedtest through OOKLA its only 5615900533613023695675531.jpgmbps and as low as 38mbps ?

My wife is an NHS employee needing to attend video conference meetings and the speed just isnt enough at 38mbps !!

Any ideas would be welcome please.

Re: Speedtest Discrepancy !!

when you run btspeetester that test your speed entirely on the bt network and is only one acceptable to BT and must be done with ethernet connection  any third party speed tester have to leave the BT network and that make cause slower download speeds

a speed of 38mb is more than adequate to take part in a video call - are you using an ethernet connection not wifi

Re: Speedtest Discrepancy !!

Ookla runs through public servers so you have to allow for network congestion, general web traffic and also server congestion at their end etc. It's not a reflection of your connection speed but a speed test with their servers.

Re: Speedtest Discrepancy !!

Also, with Ookla you're results will vary depending on the server location that the test is being ran on. If I use a default server I get a speed of 90-100mbps but if I select a local server to me that jumps up to 130-140mbps.... So many variables to take in to consideration...

Re: Speedtest Discrepancy !!

Thanks Distinguished Sage for your input, unfortunately my wife cannot use an ethernet connection as the router is located downstairs and my wife's now based in my Loft Office so impossible for cabling !!!

38mbps is not ideal as is slow and pixelated !!

Re: Speedtest Discrepancy !!

38mb download speed is more than adequate to have a video conference call but you problem appears to be your wifi connection from bottom to top of your home is not strong enough  which may be resolved with either powerline adapters to give ethernet connection or wifi extenders

Re: Speedtest Discrepancy !!

@russellj65 was the speedtest ran from your wifes laptop via WiFi or from another computer via ethernet? 38meg should be plenty for video calling but if it's pixelating I suspect that she might be getting a slower speed via WiFi in her home office
