TR069 Remote Access Client

BT HH4 uses a remote access client whereby BT can access the router, its called TR069 and you can its activity by looking at the troubleshooting logs, under TR069.

Whilst I appreciate that this might be useful now and again to check diagnostics after a phone call to BT or to update the firmware - BUT - what does it access the router every 24 hours. Commands such as '2 PERIODIC, 4 VALUE CHANGE', 'Initialising transaction for event code 6 and 6 Connection request, 4 value change'. Nothing changes on the router because its working ok.

It would be useful to know exactly what is happening and why. I do not like my router being accessed in this way, but I guess the only way out is for me to change back to my Netgear router - but I really like the HH4 even with its limitations for a techie.

It may be something to do with the DLM which I understand is on all the time - but a full explanation would be useful.

Re: TR069 Remote Access Client

TR069 is the protocol rather than the machine at the other end. As you say, there's a brief exchange between your HH and the BT/Motive server every 24 hours (a code 2 "periodic" session). You might also see code 1 "boot" notification of the HH having rebooted; code 4 "value changed' notification when a parameter set for notification has changed; or a code 6 "connection request" where the remote server has asked the HH to 'call back' - possibly to collect a firmware update. And there are other codes too.

This 'phoning home' is part of the managed service that BT provide. There are ways of turning it off - or, indeed, using third party equipment which doesn't do this.

Re: TR069 Remote Access Client

Thanks for the explanation, does this carry any overhead because I note that my BT circuit syncs slightly slower with the exchange dslam than my o2/sky service (on another tel. line but same route and same BT cabinet). If I wanted it turned off can I interrogate my own HH4, because I note I cannot directly Telenet into it. Still I am getting 15-16 Mb/s so I guess I cannot complain for adsl2+ (and still no BT Infinity here!) 🙂  Regards M

Re: TR069 Remote Access Client

Here's my TR069 log for part of today - seems odd to me. And it was difficult to post - because ?? "Your post has been changed because invalid HTML was found in the message body. The invalid HTML has been removed. Please review the message and submit the message when you are satisfied."

Re: TR069 Remote Access Client

To put it bluntly, BT are trying to fix thier c**k-up by changing values in our 'broken' router firmware.

Your logs are a common site amongst those affected.
