Terrible speeds in my village

Hi all,

I've recently done a survey of all of the houses in my village (35 of them - Sheldon in the Derbyshire Peak District) and recorded all of their broadband speeds. The results are at http://www.sheldonvillage.org.uk/broadband.html and are being updated fairly regularly.

As you can see, the speeds are all over the place, which seems totally crazy to me as we all run off the same single wire into the village, are all BT broadband/phone customers, and all link to the exchange in Bakewell. Is there any way that I can contact somebody (anybody) who can try and help those of us in the village who seem to be stuck in the slow(er) lane compared to our neighbours. It is impossible to get to speak to anyone, and to try to get them interested in a village-wide problem.

Interestinngly, one of our residents spoke to an Opereach engineer in the village the other day who said that he'd never seen poletop equiment and cable in such a poor state of repair (rusted parts, corroded brackets etc).

Any ideas would be welcomed,

John Tanner

Re: Terrible speeds in my village

as you know this is a customer help customer forum and only BT employees are the forum mods

however in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) BT Speedtester and post the results .

looking at your stats may then lead to asssistance for other neighbours

are you connected directly to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?

Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

Re: Terrible speeds in my village

To add to imjolly's post every line will also be different due to length and quality particular internal extensions and were hubs are connected to eg master socket or extensions can make dramatic differences from house to house

Re: Terrible speeds in my village

Yeah, getting the line stats of everyone in the village might be a bit problematic. Each of the speed tests shown were done at the master socket of each house, in the hidden test socket.

Taking my house as an example, I have one of the slowest speeds in the village, and I've got a 'speed improvement' faceplate...bit of a joke really. We only have one socket in the house, and yet my speeds are roughly half those of my neighbours, who all daisy off the single wire to my house. BT Broadband insist there isn't a problem, but how on earth this is possible is beyond me. It is doubly irritating as both neighbours are elderly and retired, whereas my wife and I try to remote work off a 0.5meg connection 😞

Re: Terrible speeds in my village

The implication in your post is that all the BB accounts are BT customers[?].

If thats the case, Id be thinking about having a pop at getting the village onto Infinity and go for bust.

Re: Terrible speeds in my village

also one slight correction each property has its own individual pair of cables that run in a multi pair cable not a single wire

Re: Terrible speeds in my village

Yeah, we are all BT customers ... but we live in the rear-end of nowhere ie the middle of the Peak District National Park. I would imagine we'll see infinity shortly before the next ice age 😛
