The Saga continues - HH5 '1-boot' resets

Go to solution

In 2019 I posted about a problem with a HH5 rebooting excessively under the heading 'Sudden increase in 1 boot resets on HH5'

After the discussion and a bit of help from Matt S, things seemed to settle but I still had a large number of un-commanded reboots.

25 reboots in Dec 2019

41 reboots in Jan 2020

2 reboots in Feb 2020 !!  - Normal watchdog reboots

2 reboots in Mar 2020 up to 26th  - Normal watchdog reboots

27 reboots from 26th to 31st Mar 2020 - the reason for this post.

Now the important think to note is nothing my side of the HH5 has significantly changed, still the same cabling, UPS on the HH5, position on the shelf etc. Some PCs have been retired and replaced by newer versions with a similar configuration and this was done in February, a stable period. Why the sudden wide variation in reliability now?

I have done the usual HH5 stuff like splitting the 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi. Incidentally, I would mention that the HH5 has never properly allocated DHCP leases to 5GHz devices - everything has to be set to a manual IP. Also it displays no devices connected to 5GHz when they are in fact connected and the 'Home Network - Devices' refresh is a total work of fiction. I have also seen an increase in DNS failures and several trips have been made to the Cloudflare DNS error page recently. Is BT infrastructure going through a DNS reliability problem?

I could buy a Draytek 2762 (if they a still considered OK) to replace the HH5 but I do feel that these problems seem to be coming from the BT side of things and it could be a total waste of £150. Any thoughts anyone?

I now having to wait to post this as the HH5 has rebooted again! Only 12 reboots today.

Down Rate 66919Kbps Up 16999Kbps SNR Down 8.3dB Up 17.6dB.

Hi @SMJ1,

Thanks for posting. Sorry you're still having problems. Have you checked for any noise on the line?

Cheers

Hi David, usual tests and fault finding routines have been followed. Line noise and SNR seem fine.

@SMJ1 do you get any noise on the line if you try the quiet line test by dialling 17070?

Have now replaced HH5 with a Draytek 2762ac. Carried over same IP settings, router addresses etc from HH5 (which is now unloved in a drawer).

So far in the first 24hours no problems and DHCP works with no DNS snags. Now I will upgrade a MacMini from Mojave to Catalina to see how a prolonged download goes.

I'll repost after the first week of use.

Good choice of Modem Router - hoping it brings you some stability.

I did say I would report how things have turned out.

Draytek has not rebooted in 23 days since first setting up.

Last BT DSL dropout 10 days ago.

Seems like a win (as I rapidly earth that last remark on a piece of timber)
