Transfering to BT has resulted in me losing my telephone number.

Can anyone give me advice please?

Some weeks ago I ordered infinity from BT and was told my current number would be transfered. (I was with Hometelecom, was Pipex). My order failed and at BT's request went through the whole ordering process another three times, all failing. Each time I made clear that I didnt want to lose my current telephone number and each time I was told that that definitely would not happen.

Now Hometelcom has told me they have released the number at Bt's request, but now it is not active (seems to be a Virgin Media number), BT now tell me there is nothing they can do to get the number from Virgin.

Up till now I had to have the patience of a saint but now I really feel I have been sold down the river. BT and Hometelecom are effetively blaming each other's procedures.

Ofcom say the new provider must make all the transfer arrangements. This clearly hasn't happened. So I may have to take up with Ofcom.

Has anyone managed to resolve a deadlock like this, or pursued it with Ofcom? I would be pleased to hear.

Thanks!

Re: Transfering to BT has resulted in me losing my telephone number.

I have contacted them on my Brother's behalf as he has had no phone or broadband for almost a week.

Yes, that's 3 of us in the same family who have had separate nighmares with BT!

Amazing after almost 3 months and 20 phone calls and complaints to BT they still can't get it right and re-port his old number.

Useless!!!!

Re: Transfering to BT has resulted in me losing my telephone number.

I am having a similar problem.  I arranged to transfer my landline from Virgin to BT, making  it very clear that I needed  to keep my number.  The line was installed on 13 December but despite many long hours on the phone, my number has not been ported across.  I am at my wits end with it.  I have tried calling customer services many times.  Always to a foreign call centre and generally the same script with someone who clearly  does not understand the problem.

I eventually called the technical department in order to get to speak to someone in the Uk and got a very helpful man who blamed Virgin for not handing over the number despite four requests.  I called Virgin who said they had not received any requests.  Someone is not telling the truth! I was told that it would be dealt with and that a date for, porting was in the system. Still waiting.

i have actually been given a series of dates for porting but each time I wait and nothing happens.

Meanwhile I am paying line rental to Virgin to keep the number live and to receive calls whilst also having paid rental in advance to BT.

i would never have switched had I been told I could not my keep my number.  I don't want to go back to cable if I can avoid it.  I do want my number.  Help!

Re: Transfering to BT has resulted in me losing my telephone number.

Thanks John46, but I am afraid that I am getting absolutely nowhere! I did get a quick response to my message and was promised that my number would be ported on 29 January.  This did not happen but, yet again, no-one at BT bothered to check or to contact me to tell me why i still didn't have my old number.  Since then I have been trying to sort it out.  It is now 10 weeks since the line was installed and I am at my wits end.
