So you haven't replaced the SmartHub then?  So the SmartHub could still be causing your problem then as you would have double-NAT?  You need to try using a different VDSL modem with the XR500 router.

Would you recommend the same modem you are using or is their better alternatives?

Yes I would definitely recommend the Vigor 130 modem though it's not cheap at around £80 - mine has been up for 9 months so far with no disconnections.  There are cheaper options such as the Netgear DM200 and some other VDSL modem/routers that work in bridge mode but I haven't tried them personally.

Re: Unstable connection / high ping spikes

I have literally just created a forum account to respond to this thread.

I have been having MAJOR issues with connection stability - so I decided to google 'BT ping spikes' and this thread appeared.

I scrolled down to look at the images the original poster had provided, the images showing his traceroute and packet loss and noticed an ALARMING similarity to my issue.

I saw the list of IP addresses and noticed 31.55.187.180 and 31.55.187.181 - I had just spent the last 20 minutes running and rerunning tracert commands to lon.login.pathofexile.com - and the route would FREQUENTLY time out on the IP address ranging from 31.55.187.(178-182).

I find it an absolute **bleep** take that certain individuals begin suggesting the most outrageous and quite frankly nonsensical suggestions to SOLVE this problem. Such as, but not limited to; factory resetting the BT Home Hub router? Like what the f...

The original poster quite clearly states that they've noticed an influx of reports on the forums regarding this issue. Anyone with any sense would realise that these issues lay outside of the individuals homes and lay squarely on BT's infrastructure. How else would multiple end-users be suffering from the exact same issue and with the exact same IP timeouts, packet loss, etc...

I laughed so hard when I saw the original poster respond to the suggestion that he stop watching a stream whilst playing videos. How dare you suggest such a ludicrous solution. What on god's green Earth are you thinking? An end-user on FIBER can't watch a stream and game at the same time? Go work at McDonalds for christ sake.

Re: Unstable connection / high ping spikes

I've got exactly the same issue and have posted about it on several threads,as for the Op I wouldn't bother getting new equipment,I bought a Draytek Vigor 130 and Asus router and it's made no difference.

I've had an engineer come out and check everything about my connection, used a wired connection changed to all new leads basically everything you can think of,this is BT fault.

I have exactly the same high packet loss to the same Bt servers even when my network is having low usage,I'm currently waiting to hear back from level 2 complaints.

I've checked my connection and a couple of peole watching youtube while someone games should not cause connection problems,it's far too much of a coincidence that this began in December for most people that have started similar threads.

Bt have changed something that has caused this and won't admit it,or have a fault and can't be bothered to fix it.

Re: Unstable connection / high ping spikes

Yeah, getting this exact same issue here.

The Streaming + Gaming seems to settle down after 23:30 though.....

Playing PoE atm and my ping graph is basically flat.. 20-25ms max while watching a 6000Kbps Twitch Stream.

During the day im seeing spikes from 20-70ms with one stream running, if there's two streams we're seeing 175ms spikes.

Can anyone else test this being time related also.

Re: Unstable connection / high ping spikes

We need to petition Bt about this, these forums are full of threads with the same issue mainly starting from December.

It's the only way to get Bt to do anything about it.

It's the same for me whatever time off day/night playing videos sends the ping shooting up and as for people posting on these forums to not play videos how ridiculous when your talking about fibre connection!

It isn't dial up speeds! It should work fine if you have a couple of people watching Youtube and someone gaming, that would not be enough to saturate a network and cause issues, this is a Bt causing this!
