Updating IP address

I have just received a very dodgy call telling me that unless I update the I P address by following lots of instructions, I will lose my internet connection.  As I have no idea what an IP address is I terminated the call saying I would contact BT directly.  Is this a scam of some kind to try and get me to dilvulge details or have I over reacted?
