Upgrading to 20mb broadband?

Hi

Hope to tap your collective brains.

I am getting 7.6Mbps as opposed to an advertised 13Mbps. What do I need to do to find out why?

The speed checker part of the bt.com web site indicates that my phoine number should get 13mb broadband (of the possible 20mb). However, I currently get only 7.6Mbps (see below). I have tried both a BT Home Hub 2 and a BT Voyager 2110 ADSL router.

Line Mode     G.DMT           Line State     Show Time
Latency Type     Interleave           Line Up Time     00:00:15:24
Line Coding     Trellis Off           Line Up Count     1

    Statistics     Downstream     Upstream
Line Rate     7616 Kbps     448 Kbps
Noise Margin     10.4 dB     22.0 dB
Line Attenuation     29.0 dB     16.0 dB
Output Power     19.8 dBm     11.8 dBm

I also checked http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/ which says:

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 7Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL2+ broadband line speed of 13Mbps. When ADSL2+ Annex M is launched our test also indicates that your line could support an estimated ADSL 2+ Annex-M broadband upstream line speed of 1Mbps and downstream line speed of 7Mbps.

I have checked the ADSL2+ setting on the 2110

ADSL Configuration

Select the support of line modes: (all of these selected)
      G.dmt     G.lite     T1.413
      ADSL2     READSL2     ADSL2+

Capability Enabled: (both selected)
      Bit Swapping     Seamless Rate Adaptation

What do I need to do to determine why I am getting 7.6 as opposed to 13?

How do I know if my modem is only trying ADSL as opposed to ADSL2+?

Thanks

Andrew

Re: Upgrading to 20mb broadband?

Line mode G.DMT suggests to me G992.1 -  plain old ADSL, not ADSL2/+, and the upstream speed of 448Kbps is typical for an "up to 8Mbps" DSL Max connection.

If I unchecked G.DMT on my 2110, the model refuses to sync. How do I check the mode on a home hub?

btw, I checked SamKnows http://www.samknows.com/old/broadband/exchange.php?ecode=THWK and Woking has 21CN WBC status: Enabled

Thanks

Andrew

Re: Upgrading to 20mb broadband?

You have not been switched over to the new 20MB service.

I suggest you email the forum moderation team here: forum.moderation.team@bt.com and ask if you can be switched over.

Also note: You have to renew your contract with BT in order to be switched over to the new 20mb service.

As for the 7616kbps sync: If you have interleaving on when you are on ADSL1, you will sync at a max of 7616kbps, not 8128kbps.

Hope this helps 🙂

Re: Upgrading to 20mb broadband?

Thanks Chris I have emailed them.

I renewed earlier this year (March time) and was told that I would be upgraded later in the year (they expected mid year).

BTW, how do I check that ADSL2+ is switched on for my home hub?

Thanks

Andrew

Nothing to do - it should be automatic.
If it shows 992.1 you've got a DSL Max (up to 8Mbps) connection - if it syncs at ADSL2+ it'll show 992.5

Re: Upgrading to 20mb broadband?

If your normal sync speed is about 3mb or less you will see very little change on adsl2+.  However with your speed and attenuation of 29db I would expect a significant improvement. This site shows expected connection based on very good line but gives you an idea http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php  just enter your attenuation.
