V noisy landline indeed

Hi All

Have Panasonic corded KX-TGF320E phone. For a good while now, friends and family have moaned about noise when using, which I ignored, as we’d deliberately fitted corded to avoid noise. Tried to use today and it was dreadful, like in eye of hurricane. Plugged into test socket and “Quiet line” test not exactly quiet. Nowhere near as bad but still audible buzz in background. (Can provide
sound file if needed)

Phone is plugged into extension socket about eight feet from master socket. Replaced old extension when we bought phone (about two years ago) Cable goes around a door and within narrow trunking to avoid damage to skirting. (Not under carpet)

The extension kit was one of those where you have bare end of wires and coil around screws, not punch into place. Don’t think that should have made a difference?

V grateful for your knowledge on:

1. What to expect with quiet line test? (Not silent etc)

2. Any advice re extension set up? (Can also provide pictures of this)

Should also have said that master is new, having been replaced by BT few months ago.

We have a second (cordless) Panasonic phone in bedroom.

if you connect to test socket and any line noise is a problem  did you check that all your extension sockets are 'dead' no dial tone when you are connected to test socket?

if extensions are dead when using test socket then you need to report the noise as a phone fault to 151

Thanks for prompt reply. Will check sockets dead, but assumed this to be so as main faceplate cover disconnected to expose test socket. Will probably end up reporting, but it’s odd as BT only replaced outside cable and master socket a few months ago.

Just to be clear, should it be called the silent line, rather than quiet line test?

it is known as quiet line test as with a cordless you can get a dull hum which is normal but qith corded there should be no noise.  when using test socket all other socket should not have a dial tone but if you have extensions wired incorrectly and get a dial tone then that is serious problem for your broadband and needs fixed

Thanks again. Yep, definitely corded. We only have the one extension, as unit upstairs is plug in cordless.

if upstairs has cordless then the base station must be connected to the extension socket so there should be no dial tone on the cordless phone when corded phone connected to test socket

Update
Plugged corded into test socket. However, upstairs cordless unit still works, so am a bit worried and confused. Just to be clear though, when you say “cordless must be connected to extension socket” etc... It has no physical connection, as only plugs into mains power in bedroom. If that still constitutes “connected”, and it still works, how should I now proceed?

The cordless base station must be connected to an extension socket which is still working.

my cordless phone has a base unit which is connected to the main power supply but is also connected to a phone socket. and when I use my individual corded phone and connect to test socket my cordless phone does not work as the base unit does not get a dial tone
