Vpn

Hi all 

I am in the stage of moving house and I would like to apply a vpn to my router , from what I understand I cannot apply a vpn directly to my by smart hub 2 at all but I could bridge or replace the router it’s self with a Asus router. 
there are a few things I am unsure and in the unknown about . Firstly does the router need to be a modem router? Would I have the 2 routers connected to each other and would that mean it’s the same name which appears on the WiFi list ? Is there any recommendations on routers or any alternatives you would recommend to add vpn coverage to the whole house and WiFi itself ? I was thinking of getting a asus rt ac68u but then I read that you might need a Asus dsl ac68u , it might be me but this is very overwhelming to get the single vpn function . If there is any guidance or tips I would be very appreciative

A cost effective approach would be to get a Raspberry Pi and install PiVPN with Wireguard. I have been running this vpn server and it has been solid. Basically I didn’t want to change my Smarthub 2.

Regarding the raspberry pi 

does that mean it will cover all the devices connected to the broadband? Do I have to have a vpn subscription? Also how do I go about adding the code for the vpn ? And last off all does it plug into my existing router ?

Running a VPN server is different to subscribing to a VPN service. However, they both send data encrypted.

Subscriptions services refer to the likes of Nord or IPVanish and are typically used to "hide" your IP address when streaming content. This allows users to access online TV services from different countries or content that is restricted in their own country. 

The server will allow you to access your LAN securely when away from home without opening ports (other than one for the VPN.  Typical uses include IP cameras, NAS drives, music streamers etc. You enable the VPN connection with an app. PiVPN sits anywhere on your network ideally connected via ethernet rather than Wifi. No subscription is needed and PiVPN/Wireguard is free. There are lots of guides for installing PiVPN/Wireguard (https://www.pivpn.io). I will now consider buying a raspberry pi.   Unsure which model but if I can code the it to preform the pivpn as long as I can get it sent to a stable cover IP address and it covers all my devices connected to the Broadband 

have you done this yourself personally?

if so do you have any tips regarding which model to purchase and installation tips

Sorry I forgot to add a comment so I connect the vpn by an app ? I was told that when in coding you set the Bon as a stable ip not having an app that might time out ?

I use a RPi4 and yes I set my own Vpn server earlier in the year.
Plenty of support on the RPi forums. Just do a bit of reading beforehand...
