Several emails have been sent to different departments in BT to try and get a response. I will chase it up again today!
Will the device allow the update if you do it over Wi-fi or using a different SIM card? What happens after you place the BT sim back in the handset?
No problem. I was just trying to work out if it was the sim, handset or firmware stopping it.
I have been discussing this with the community manager and several people within BT, and got the following response
The Nokia 7 Plus is not a device that BT have ever ranged directly. Sometimes software updates can take a little bit longer where it’s a BT build, as we need to perform testing and validation to ensure the best possible customer and network experience. This is not the case with the Nokia 7 Plus. If it’s an open market device, it would be performed directly by Nokia. If the device was obtained from another operator, this would be dictated by them. Unfortunately those scenarios are completely outside of BT’s control."
I don’t like to do multiple post, but I have been able to get this response

Hi Dean.
Is your last post applicable to both the Nokia 6.1 & Nokia 7 Plus (you just mention the latter)?
If so this represents a MAJOR problem on BTs part.
My Nokia 6.1 was bought as an unlocked retail purchase, so has never been on another network. If you are saying that because BT doesn't offer this phone in their line up then they have no support for it, why do you offer Sim Only plans?
Better still why isn't there a disclaimer in your ads saying you only support the phones you stock?
The response you got really is corporate bs...
First off it states that software updates can take a little longer where it's a BT build - but I thought that was the whole point of Android one!! The updates don't require the intervention of the carrier?
The updates are NOT performed directly by Nokia, otherwise we wouldn't even be having this conversation (I also tried updating with Sim out over Wifi - no go). Also, if this was the case then why does all updating work when you put in a Vodafone or another carrier Sim (FYI - Vodaphone don't list any Nokia phones on their site, yet they allow the unit to update - what does that say about BT)?
I hope there are still lines of enquiry ongoing regarding this issue, and look forward to getting it resolved very soon.
As always, thanks for your help Dean!
