Why such different speeds within a very small area?

Hi,

I have had the Superfast Fibre Broadband package for a couple of years now.

We moved house in July this year and in the previous property we were getting speeds of 60+.

I've moved less than 0.5 miles into a different house and my guaranteed speed has dropped to 32, and I'm literally only getting 32.

I like the reach that BT has, as we have no problems with it reaching all around the house and quite far down the garden - but it is annoying that I'm paying the same price now for half the speed I was getting before.

My mum also lives practically opposite me but in the next road that runs parallel and she's getting speeds of 65+.

I don't really understand the vast difference....am I in a speed "blackspot"??

Is there a more cost effective package that I should be on?

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Why such different speeds within a very small area?

enter your phone number and post results  remember delete number   https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome

post stats from hub  if hh6 then advanced settings then technical log information

speed on vdsl drops off far quicker than adsl does over distance  as shown here

Re: Why such different speeds within a very small area?

Here you go.  I cant test the phone number of my previous property as we moved the number with us.

New postcode is RM12 5RA, previous was RM12 5SD.

If I need to do anything, can you please dumb it down as I don't understand the technical terms lol.

Thanks.

Re: Why such different speeds within a very small area?

Also this at the bottom:

FTTP is not available.

For all ADSL and WBC Fibre to the Cabinet (VDSL or G.fast) services, the stable line rate will be determined during the first 10 days of service usage.

This line is on a Market B Exchange.

For VDSL or G.fast Ranges A and B, the term "Clean" relates to a line which is free from any wiring issues (e.g. Bridge Taps) and/or Copper line conditions, and the term "Impacted" relates to a line which may have wiring issues (e.g. Bridge Taps) and/or Copper line conditions.

In order to be eligible for handback, downstream speed should be less than Downstream Handback Threshold values.

Throughput/download speeds will be less than line rates and can be affected by a number of factors within and external to BT's network, Communication Providers' networks and within customer premises.

The Stop Sale date for Datastream is from 30-Jun-2012; the Formal Retirement date for Datastream is from 30-Jun-2014. The Stop Sale date for IPstream is from 30-Nov-2012; the Formal Retirement date for IPstream is from 30-Jun-2014.

If the End User wishes to migrate from their current Broadband supplier they will need to contact the Broadband supplier they want to take service from to arrange for the service to be migrated.

Please note that postcode and address check results are indicative only. Most accurate results can be obtained from a telephone number, NAD, UPRN or Access Line ID (ALID) check.

Note: If you decide to place an order for a WBC fibre product, an appointment may be required for an engineer to visit the end user's premises to supply the service.

Thank you for your interest.

Re: Why such different speeds within a very small area?

In Cornwall you can have every variant from adsl to g.fast and fttp within a radius of a mile. It all depends on what was originally done , any new roll-out or new build developments - very hit and miss!

As regards your connection the checker shows that you have a data rate of  61.95 down . Are you testing with a wired connection as that gives an accurate result. Given the date was 25 Sept the connection is unlikely to have dropped since then if at all since you moved in.

Can you post the hub stats - enter 192.168.1.254 in the address bar and then   advanced settings then technical log information.

Re: Why such different speeds within a very small area?

you need to post the hub stats but as already said your connection speed according to dslchecker was 61mb back in september which is right at top of expected range

Re: Why such different speeds within a very small area?

What is the best way to do a speed test?

And how do I post hub stats?

The BT website and app won't do a speed test for me - I either get stuck on the "speed test in progress stage" for AGES or the app says "we were not able to test your speed" (See attached).

My email regarding my package also only guarantees 32, and a generic speedtest app that I use shows lower than 30.

So is my connection speed showing one speed, but I'm only getting half of that?

Thanks.

Check for noise on you phone line. 17070 option 2. The line should be silent between announcements, best with corded phone.
