Will a different hub put an end to the frequent restarts of my BT smarthub?

Go to solution

I've finally had enough of the random, inconvenient restarts of our BT smarthub. Having read the numerous posts about this, I tried the recommended restart when I was up at 03.00 last week, in the hope that future restarts would stick to this time........no chance.

What I'd like to know is this; have people who use 3rd party hubs found that it puts an end to the random restarts, and if so, what 3rd party hub do you use?

Due to similar problems a couple of years ago I have been using a TP-Link modem/router and have not had a problem since. Mine is a VR 900 model which is now out of production but others are available and mentioned elsewhere on here.

Here is an alternative which will do everything you want, provided you are not on superfast fibre (Gfast)

TP-Link AC1200 Wireless Dual Band VDSL/ADSL about £67

https://www.tp-link.com/uk/products/details/cat-15_Archer-VR400.html#specifications

Emulator https://emulator.tp-link.com/Archer_VR400(EU)_V2/index.htm

It will work with BT YouView.

My daughter uses the cheaper W9970 on VDSL, and its never restarted.

Random drops in connection  sound more like a line problem unlike the regular 14/7 day reset so moving to another router may not solve any problems   you need to see if you can solve the cause of the drops  -  using test socket?

Line drops should not cause restarts of the home hub.

A very high error rate may force a restart, but this would be audible on a phone if the errors were that bad. I assume you have checked for noise on your phone?

Thanks all, I've decided to take the plunge and will be installing a new router/modem this afternoon.
I'll try and remember to post back here in a month or so and let any interested people know whether this has made any difference to the regular restarts every 7-8 days, sometimes every 3-4 days, and beyond that, whether the range & download rate are as good as the BT hub

I'm pleased to say I've now had 14 days without a hub restart! I got the TP link VR900 AC1900. I'm also finding the range & strength are better than the BT hub. If it all starts to go wrong I'll be back here, but otherwise, after years of irritating and inconvenient hub restarts, it rather looks as if the BT hub is the culprit (I've had this with BT 4, 5, & 6 hubs), and feel stupid not to have done this sooner, given the number of posts here and elsewhere about this.
