I have finally been persuaded to try an e-mail client for my BTYahoo account: Windows Livemail. Two questions:
a. is it possible to sync storage folders on webmail with those on Livemail or do I have to save everything twice?
b. assuming the answer is that they can't be synced, if I store/delete a mail message on the client what happens on the webmail?
Grateful for any answers!
Jim D.
See link about the difference between an IMAP account and a POP account.

Clients are usually set by default to delete downloaded messages from the server but there will be a setting to override this. If you leave messages in the server inbox they won't be downloaded more than once.
Of course this is irrelevant if you choose IMAP.
Thanks folks that is helpful. I have a feeling it might generate other questions shortly however!
Hello again. As I feared the process is fairly opaque to me and I can't navigate it. When done automatically the account is set up with something called POP3, not IMAP. I can't see how to set the account up as IMAP, and a search of the BT help system doesn't help me.
Any further advice would be very welcome. I prematurely pressed the Solved button. I wondered whether IMAP isn't available to me because I am still on BTYahoo.
See this link about setting up Windows Live Mail
You are best to select the manual set up and enter the settings your self rather than using the "wizard".
The settings you need are here
Server incoming and out going: mail.btinternet.com
Email user name: (Normally you only need the prefix of your email address but some users have found the need to enter their full email address.ie xxxxx@btinternet.com)
Password: Your BT email password.
Log on using clear text authentication
Out Going Server in requires Authentication (Use same as incoming mail server. Some users have found that they need to enter the password and username instead of ticking box “use same as incoming mail server” )
Outgoing Port : 465 SSL security
Incoming Port : 993 SSL security

Thanks once again gg30340.
I wondered after I posted before whether things would be different with Outlook rather than Live Mail. (I had thought they would be more complicated.) Experimenting, I found that the two versions of Outlook sitting on my machine (2007 and 2013) both install, via the wizard, a link to BTYahoo which uses IMAP, automatically and is thus synced: so I have ditched Live Mail.
Since you seem to be able to find Help pages that I can't locate I wondered whether you knew of one for sharing BTYahoo Calendar with Outlook. I have had some success with this but can only get it to sync one way (from BTYahoo to Outlook): so all changes need to be made via the webmail site.
Anyway, thanks once again.
I don't use BTYahoo Calendar so have never had to do that but here are a few links showing how to do it in Yahoo so it will probably be the same with BTYahoo.
