Re: Windows update/activation blocked on our BT connection..

After changing the settings I did not reboot. The following website, which has been mentioned previously in this thread walks you through the process with screenshots. https://www.windowscentral.com/how-change-your-pcs-dns-settings-windows-10

Yesterday I changed my settings to the Google DNS and then obtained all the available updates (including Apps from the store). I then changed back to the default settings. This morning without thinking I checked for updates and it worked perfectly on the default settings. Not sure if what I did forced the Hub to get new settings that resolved the issue or in the 30 minutes yesterday that it took to obtain the updates BT/Microsoft fixed the problem. To much of a coincidence I think!

Just switched my DNS setting back to the router address (i.e. BT DNS) and Windows Update is working again.

Hasn't worked for me. I rather think it's still a work in progress for dear old BT.

Having changed to Google DNS and had various updates installed, I reverted to BT DNS, I think, and it is working fine.

Well I first noticed this problem on Thursday, but yesterday it appeared to have been fixed as I was able to perform some updates. Today though it seems to have broken again.

Also if your using WiFi it's this connection you need to change the DNS settings for.
I thought, that if connecting using WiFi via a BT Smart Hub, the DNS settings couldn't be changed. Or am I missing something?

Found this  - worked for me !

There are multiple reports of Windows update not being able to connect to the Update server and other Microsoft services not being able to connect to the Internet. While this is being investigated, you can try changing the DNS and see if it resolves the issue for you.

To change the DNS, perform the following steps:

  1. Press Windows key+R to open Run dialog box.
  2. Type in cpl and press Enter.
  3. Right-click the device in the Network list through which you connect and choose Properties.
  4. Select Internet Protocol version 4 and choose properties just below the Checkbox list.
  5. Select the radio button "Use the following DNS servers" and add the following values in the boxes:

    8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
  6. Press OK and Reboot your computer.

If that doesn't help, consider waiting for a day or two when the Internet service providers across the world correct it.

@Stompa You are missing something. You can change DNS settings on the wireless adaptor of your device.
