Windows update/activation blocked on our BT connection..

Go to solution

Hi all

As per the subject, I am working in a PC repair shop and we have BT Fibre 40/20 and for the last 2 days we have been unable to download windows updates on any machine on the network or even activate windows,

We get an error saying the pc cant contact the activation server and also the update server.

Riddle me this, I create a hotspot on my android phone and connect to it and the above works absolely fine.

Nothings changed here, we have a small network, 16 port switch which is connected to our BT Hub 5 no server or anything that can create issues with the internet.

I have restarted the switch, bt equipment etc, internet works fine we just cant use any microsoft update/activation..

Please advise..

Try changing DNS on one of the machines. If that works you know what the problem is.

BTW  this is BT Residential forum. If the above doesn't work you should progress this on the business forum.

Not sure about the activation problem, but Windows update has failed today, here. “Cannot Connect” error.

All Windows updates were current as of yesterday, and no changes since then. Both Windows 10 pc’s give same error. Perhaps wait until USA wakes up......

You could try ms forums, but information there  is unclear.

Same problem here

Tried several times here today. It’s not a disaster as most updates come through 2nd Tuesday/ Wednesday of the month.

Now at the stage where it takes about 30 seconds to give the unable to connect message. This indicates some activity at least.

Yes, changing the DNS may help, but you may get some support from Microsoft.

Windows 10 - Windows Update unable to connect to internet

Go to solution

Just wondering if anyone else has been having problems since yesterday with downloading Windows Updates on Windows 10 machines? I have 5 computers all running Windows 10 and connected to the internet via my BT Smart Hub 6 (some on wifi and some on ethernet). Whenever I check for updates Windows 10 checks and comes back with a message that it cannot connect to internet. The internet is working perfectly fine however outside of Windows Update, with all 5 machines able to surf the web download through web browsers and game clients like steam and origin etc. If I tether to my mobile phone the updates download without any issue so that has narrowed it down to the smart hub or BT Fibre itself I have factory reset my smart hub via the web interface and also by the reset button located on the back of the unit. Neither of these factory resets has managed to fix the problem with receiving updates at all. The only other thing I have left to try is another router but I cannot find my old BT Home Hub 5 at the moment to rule this out. Tonight as a workaround I'm going to setup my machines so that they can share updates across my network as a temporary fix. That way one of the machines tethered to my phone can download updates and share the updates with all my other PC's across my network. Interested in hearing back from anyone else with the same problem or am I just on my own here?

Exact same problem happening here. All 5 Windows 10 machines stopped receiving updates last night. Nothing changed on any of my machines. Factory reset Smart Hub twice and has made no difference. Must be something BT's end as tether to mobile internet (which in my case is also BT ironically) works fine.
