This might be a silly suggestion, but have you checked the printer's IP and the IP the laptop thinks the printer should be on?

My HP printer shifted a digit in its IP when I switched.

Hi maybe not so silly a suggestion, but I need to ask a silly question to find out, how do I check this , I know what the IP address the printer thinks it has, how do I check this is the same on the laptop?

There is a thread relating to that or a similar printer here.

You do not need to touch the laptop settings. Once you have given the printer a static IP address, then simply follow the instructions on my website, on how to add a printer based on its IP address.

I am sorry I must be being really thick.   But if I press the wireless button on the printer it tells me it is connected and gives me an IP address of 192.168.1.70  - this is confirmed by the printout from the settings report.

Now I have done as you have said re setting up printer using TCP/IP  and inserting the above number and its says it is set up but the test print does not work it justs gets put in the print que and then an error comes up that says the printer is offline.

I have done a trouble shoot and it says that the printer cannot be detected on the network.

What am I missing?  By the way thanks for the help so far, I am not hugely techy as you can tell

Have you tried changing the printer IP address to 192.168.1.50, as I suggested on my webpage?

You will have to do this with the printer connected via USB cable I would imagine.
