Wireless keeps dropping out even with a brand new home hub !!

been on infinity for a few months now and then just before xmas for no apparent reason our wireless kept dropping out completely ! Cant even connect to wifi using mobile phone or NDS so its not a windows issue.

After having spent 45 minutes on the phone to BT at the weekend they sent me a new home hub and problem solved....... you would think....

24 hours later we are back to the same problem !!

Looking at the web page on the home hub everything is tickety boo ! Wireless pc's are connected, however.... the Pc say limited connectivity, no internet access unidentified network !

The only way to remedy this is to reset the router (which we did before on the old one for 3 weeks before it gave up working on wireless completely)

We have a full signal on the wireless and are all using N adapters and have tried different channels but 3 times today wireless dropped !!

Can anyone help ?

Re: Wireless keeps dropping out even with a brand new home hub !!

did you try changing channel but ad hoc?  if so try downloading inssider2 (istumbler if MAC) and then run it. This will show the broadcasting networks round about you and their channels including your own. Then enter your router and change your wireless channel to a free or less congested channel.

Re: Wireless keeps dropping out even with a brand new home hub !!

Funny you should sugges that.

Just dropped again and after rebooting router again I downloaded it and run it.

Already tried every number but inssider shows me now I am on 3 and every other router in the areas is 7+ so theres no interference and I bet it drops again in a minute GRRR.

Its not just my pc either... its the laptop and my sons pc upstairs ! So annoying

Re: Wireless keeps dropping out even with a brand new home hub !!

it always possible that there other networks round about that are not broadcasting their ssid.  There are others with the same problem which I have seen on the forum but don't remember seeing a conclusion

Re: Wireless keeps dropping out even with a brand new home hub !!

I suspect it will be radio frequency (RF) interference from some new device that you or a neighbour has just installed. Be aware that the 2.4GHz band that WiFi uses is shared with all sorts of other devices. Inssider won't show these up - it just displays other WiFi systems.

Devices to beware of include DECT cordless phones and (especially) microwave ovens. All microwave ovens leak a little RF power. Some of the cheap and cheerful ones may leak a bit more - and that will completely wipe out a WiFi signal.

This is a difficult problem. To trace interference of this sort you need a device known as a "Spectrum analyser". This is quite impractical for the non-specialist - as well as being VERY expensive.  Sorry if this sounds discouraging, but bear in mind the nature of any form of radio system is that it will be less reliable than hard wired cabling. You may have to use straightforward ethernet cable instead.

Re: Wireless keeps dropping out even with a brand new home hub !!

Hmm ok. but wouldnt that show on the signal status ? We have full bars

As the new home hub only has 3 x wired connections as we have.... umm 3 xbox (all now on wired as they need the power) 2 Pc's and 2 laptops we are stuffed !!

Flourescent lighting and class 1 bluetooth devices (phones potentially) can cause interference on 2.4GHz also. Unlikely you'll have strip lighting in your house but there's probably a fair number of mobiles around with bluetooth enabled - it's always worth checking.

Incidentally DECT phones dont' all work in 2.4Ghz range, most work in the 1.9GHz range and can be ruled out for causing interference.

I guess the bars may show signal strength - and might respond also to the interference (?).

I suppose the way forward would be to place one PC really close to the router to see if it's signal could drown out the interference (The "Shout louder" principle....). Also - make sure the router is up in the clear - the internal aerial needs all the signal it can get, so make sure it's not on the floor behind a bit of furniture.

No problem about a lack of wired ports on the hub - you can get cheap ethernet hubs which will provide the additional ports. Lots on EBay.
