down speed is now half

So about a year ago I renewed my contract and recieved a 'smart hub' for my trouble.
After a few days I was seeing 40meg down and nearly 8meg up, which was wonderful considering I live in a small village.

So the smart hub started rebooting for no apparent reason, got worse to the point of rebooting like every hour.

So I went out and brought a Draytek 2860.

Long story short, my 40meg down speed has consistently decreased to now 22meg.

I have no idea during this time how many firmward versions Draytek has sent me, nothing has helped.

After numerous phonecalls, and to be fair they even sent an engineer to check the line, BT insist the problem is the router.

BT sent me another smart hub, but still reboots constantly and takes 15-20 mins to sync!

So I now have a Netgear D7000

VDSL LinkDownstreamUpstream

So frustrating knowing I can get alot higher speed, even the min guaranteed speed is alot higher:

Fibre broadband

32Mb-44MbEstimated download speed* range
30MbLowest assured download speed*

Any advice on where I should go from here?

Re: down speed is now half

Hello I am not sure that going out and spending dosh on another router is going to answer your problems.

I presume you are perhaps a hard core broadband user who "needs the speed" so as to speak, if not my experience of the latest BT Smart Hub is that it is suitable for most needs and this has been confirmed by both existing engineers and past engineers. There is a miriad of issues that can occur on parts of the BT network which rely on decades old copper wiring eyond the FTTC.

If you can post the advanced info from your BT  Smart Hub here there are plenty of experienced customers who can guide and help you. There is also a small dedicated team of mods who can also take ownership of your issue but they do not have magic wands nor is the solution instant. Gather as much info as you can ADSL checker, speed tests etc as well as router data and I am sure some one will help.

Good luck

Re: down speed is now half

Please post your full Home Hub router stats
Learn how from here Broadband Top Tips

Full router stats are key to any speed & connection issues.

What does BT Broadband Availability Checker estimate for your phone number? Post just the whole table and the line above it, blanking out your phone number. If it doesn't recognise your phone number, use the Address Checker, not the Postcode Checker.

Re: down speed is now half

Thank you for your reply.

I agree about going and buying another router, but I needed to try something!

The adsl checker was interesting - seems like I am getting the impacted range B

The test date was when the engineer came out I reakon. I have a NTE mk4 faceplate fitted which is where the router is plugged into of course.

We have had FTTC since is was put in, about 2 - 3 years ago, and have enjoyed around 29megs down from then up to last year when I renewed my contract. I can't recall, but I'm sure BT said they could increase speed so I renewed and then to start with I saw the speed increase nicely up to about 41-42 megs.

It really seems that without a bt router, you don't get max possible speed, but I know this cant be right. And I do not want to go back to the smart hub which drops connection all the time.

Re: down speed is now half

You may currently be getting a sync speed in the Impacted line range but the estimates you were given by BT are of a Clean line. You do have a Clean line as you have no bridge taps.

Now let's see your HH stats?

Re: down speed is now half

Currently using the netgear router. stats from that any good, or do I need to replace with the smart hub and get the stats from that?

It isn't! But most ISPs, incl. BT, will only look into issues when connected by their own router. For myself, there are some stats the HH shows that the Netgear doesn't.

Post the netgear first. Don't replace with the smart hub yet to avoid another line disconnection
