news: "BT escapes prosecution over web snooping"

"BT will not be prosecuted for snooping on the web browsing habits of its customers.

tracking cookies aren't really anything shocking, I think this made more of an issue as it was an unsolicited trial by a well known and supposedly trustworthy company. (back in '06)

Re: news: "BT escapes prosecution over web snooping"

Just saying 'The Webwise software used cookies to track people online and then tailored adverts to the sites they visited" rather understates what the system did.

The Phorm kit intercepted all web surfing, sending a fake cookie from every web site you visited, even ones that carry no advertising and ones that don't use cookies.

At the same time, it would look for keywords on every site you visited, in order to work out your interests and use this information to tailor its adverts.
