oath message

I have a message to say I need to agree to sign up for a new Yahoo partner called OATH - which will manage my preferences and tell me what ads I should have against my usage - this is clearly spam as I cant opt out - there is no governance to understand who OATH are - and I cant access my BT Yahoo eMail account on any of my devices without this message coming up - I tried to get someone at BT to resolve and they hadnt a clue and asked that I should wait 24 hours - 72 hours later I still cant get into my eMails and just get the OATH message up - help anyone

Hi, welcome to the forums.

Oath actually own Yahoo now, not a partner.

Using a mail client will be transparent to these T&Cs, which clearly they AND BT don't seem interested in.

It's probably best to use a laptop and webmail access :-

https://mail.yahoo.com

then you can click the options and deselect all the advertiser partners (by one click) - in two places, then uncheck the other box.

It's not clearly spam - it's a T&C system.

Your issue sounds like a browser problem, though on different devices it's unlikely. It could be an issue with your connection, so a router power cycle might be beneficial (turn off devices, then remove the power to the router, wait 5 minutes, then reconnect power) - and try a device again.

The issue I am trying to get BT to recognise, and they need to take notice, is that BT are parters with Yahoo with respect BTYahoo, and therefore Oath by default.

The advertiser options are all pre-checked by default, this is actually now against the law in the EU following the GDPR coming into force 25 May 2018.

BT and Yahoo/Oath need to get this looked at before they get into possible serious trouble.

BT moderators, you need to look at this ASAP and tell the senior managers, even the CEO. Do NOT ignore it.

in case you are wondering BT, see :-

https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/lawful-bas...

and look at the 4th item.

Failure to abide by this is against the law.

Re: oath message

Hi @Andy_N

Thanks for the feedback.

I've made some queries and I'll let you know when I've heard word back.

Cheers,

Robbie

Re: oath message

Because I believe this is a serious issue, I am going to daily bump this topic.

Edit. However I've just checked, and the advertisers are now unchecked by default.

Looks like someone was listening before getting into trouble.

I did inform a few places about it ...

Re: oath message

Hi
I have just tried to access my online BT Yahoo account (paid for under BT Premium as I want to keep my old BT email from the 1990,s) and was diverted to Oath. We contacted BT and got India one very unhelpful gentleman and then anoth much more helpful but neither of them knew about Oath.
How can BT so blatenly ignore the new laws, or has Yahoo been mining our emails for a long time?
I am using an ipad can I deny access from Oath by accessing from a PC and will it then work on my ipad?

Best Regards
NIck

Re: oath message

Login on a web browser at https://signin1.bt.com/login/emailloginform and you should get the pop up where you can opt out.

Hi.

BT (and Yahoo, parent company Oath) were effectively breaking the law for about 4 days. As I said in my most recent post in this thread, they have made sure that the tick boxes are now not pre-checked.

As for Yahoo mining emails, that's always been something of a grey area. They clearly do effectively monitor something so that spam/virus laden emails can be detected, as for other uses ...

Contacting BT helpdesk is always going to be a strange experience, they hardly know anything in the email section. Most of the time they don't know BT has two mail suppliers, but they should be aware that Oath took ownership of Yahoo (and AOL) about a year ago.

Rather than use webmail, use a mail client/app and access your emails by that method instead (setup as IMAP). That also serves as a backup.

Re: oath message

Hi Thank you for that.

I do generally use an email client, microsoft outlook (from office 2010) on the home PC,s and the one that comes with my ipad.

However we do not see the spam folder on either the PC,s or ipad so need to go online to yahoo every so often to view the spam. Somebody else told me that I could change the settings to allow the spam to download to my pad but I had to change the email settings to IMAP from POP3. However to do this I had to delete the email account.

I did this but cannot now get the account to reaload Do you know the BT Yahoo server? Another BT email still works and seems to be on ----Yahoo! SMTP Server---- but if I put that in it still will not work and on trying to enter it on my ipad the keyboard changes and I cannot put in any of the spaces.

Any ideas appreciated

Regards

Nick

Re: oath message

Try these instructions from fellow CL @gg30340

Ipad/iPhone set up:- Delete any previous email set up and re-start your phone/iPad. Do not let the phone set up automatically. Use the manusl set up.

Go to your iPhone home screen and tap Settings.

Scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

Tap Add Account.

Scroll down and tap Other.

Tap Add Mail Account.

Put the name you want people to see when they get mail from you in the Name field.

Enter your username in the Address field. For example, firstname.lastname@btinternet.com

Enter your password in the Password field.

In the Description field enter the name you want to use to identify the account.

Tap Next. If you get an error message at this point, tap OK.

Make sure that IMAP is selected at the top of the screen.

In the Incoming Mail Server section, change the Host Name to mail.btinternet.com

Now enter 993 in the Server port and set SSL to on.

Then scroll down to the Outgoing Mail Server section and change the Host Name to mail.btinternet.com

Now enter 465 in the Server port and set SSL to on.

Make sure the correct username and password are entered.

Tap Save.

Your settings will now be verified and you'll then see your Account screen. If this doesn’t happen automatically tap your account to access your email.

To set up an account on Outlook use the manual set up, not the wizard and use the following settings:

Your Name

Email address: Full btinternet email address

Account type: IMAP or  (POP)

Incoming server: mail.btinternet.com

Outgoing server: mail.btinternet.com

Logon information:

User name: prefix only of email address

Password: Email password

Re: oath message

Thanks for the info on this forum, most helpful. I tried to login to my (paid for) BT email via webmail as on holiday and saw the Oath message, which I found unacceptable with regard to the recent law changes. Tried again today after reading the forum and still seeing the "before you continue, an update from us"......ending withj "if you do not consent....you will be unable to access your BT | Yahoo Mail and Oath Products" page still there.

Having seen that all the tick boxes are unchecked as advised on forum by Andy N,  I went in and managed my settings, but it still come back to a "check OK" box, rather than after the manage settings section - I don't trust this to ignore what I've just managed.

If BT know that whats been on the login page is indeed illegal and the unchecked boxes reflect that then they should not allow this confusing login page to still appear. I see elsewhere on the forum that Daniel S a moderator advised back in march that "Yahoo has confirmed that BT Yahoo! customeres are currently not affected (by the sale to oath) and their information will not be shared with Oath companies". These recent mesaages are affecting my use of the sevice, logging in, using my email and having to waste time checking how secure my data actually is.

The whole thing is most intimidatory for a paid for service. I tried using "contact BT" but couldnt face the long wait on phone to speak to someone that normally doesnt have an answer so rang the ICO (information Comissioners office) instead and discussed. They reccomend that I bring this to them as a complaint. I shall do and in turn reccommend others do too.

Poor service by a UK company cowtowing to a US company that lost our data and now sold on to another that wants to data mine our emails (including incoming ones!)
