Have you set username to homehub@btbroadband.com and password to BT on the Netgear?

How are you connecting the netgear, there shouldn't be any problem?
These are the settings required
When you say the HH5 works ok, is that when it is connected directly to the phone line with the DSL lead or via the modem connected to its WAN port? Does the DSL LED come on on the modem? Which LAN port are you connecting to on the modem?
Does the HH5 work when you connect via the modem rather than directly. I.e SSFP > Modem dsl port Modem Lan1 port > HH5 WAN port
