Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

Sorry Ray I should have said been looking at an unlocked one on the well known website,
And how do you access the stats on one ?.
He tells me it still. Has the BT software inside, but on the eci's you have to go inside and issue a command to disable it,
Is that correct ?

Fair enough if you're buying one that is already unlocked, you won't have to unlock it yourself.

Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

I have an ecr/r and its very good. Its runs cooler than the HG612 and is a bit quicker.

Downside is,  its very more techinal than the hg612 and was quite a steep learning curve for me with programming commands into it via telnet.

You do have to issue commands to get the line stats.

Appently there is a new eci/r version mentioned on Kitz with a web page thats easier to use.

Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

Hi Barry,

Just ordered a rev b off the aution site, I did try the SBG3300, but had problems, may have been because its has an HG modem

and I've got  an ECi cabinet, I'll have to disable the BT software when I get it, then figure out how to access the stats, it comes

with a CD which explains all this. looking forward to giving it a go,

Mike

Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

Unlocking the HG612 is straight forward and takes just a few minutes, I could post a link to the instructions but not sure if I'm allowed ! Then, it's just a case of installing the "unlocked" firmware after which you can enter the HG612 GUI using the IP address 192.168.1.1 and then entering the username/password.

Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

Hows the eci/r going Mike1963 ?

It was a bit of a "head-scracher" at first for me setting it up and learing about telnet ect but I'm pleased I did.

Wouldn't go back to not seeing the line stats these days. 🙂

Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

The ECI/r is a little more difficult to set up. { I had a lot of help in the end}

The best way in the end for me was to use a simple switch.

With a switch its easier to telnet access the stats ,without disconnecting or swapping lan cables between computers.

Mines a no expence spared £6-ish  5-Port Fast Ethernet Desktop Switch.

[ECI/r [ 1 ]  [ 2 ]

          ^      ^

          |       |

             - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -  >  [ Router]

                  |                                        ^

                  |- - - - - [   Switch   ]------------^

There is something about iptables/masquerade methods , to aviod using a switch, but thats a way out of my league.
