Can I use a third party router with my superfast fiber broadband?

Yes, provided its a VDSL modem/router and not just a router.

Here are a couple of suggestions, there are others, but I would ask here first, to save wasting your money.

TP-Link AC1200 Wireless Dual Band VDSL/ADSL about £67

If you only want single band wireless, then this one.

The TP-Link TD-W9970 for about £40 or less.

They both work will all BT services, including BT YouView.

so do i have to put the smarthub into modem mode to be able to use a seperate router?

also i found this router will it be compatible? "ASUS RT-AC86U Wi-Fi AC2900"

No, the smart hub cannot be put into modem only mode.

If you wanted to use that ASUS router, you would also have to purchase a separate modem, at extra expense.

The Asus DSL-AC68U would work, as that is the correct one, but expensive.

no i dont want to have to use anything else other than a router of my choice.

so your saying i can't use  "ASUS RT-AC86U Wi-Fi AC2900" unless i buy a seperate modem?

Also this one you suggested ARCHER VR400 AC1200, will work and i wont need anything else, to make it work?

It should be fine. Most TP Link routers are plug and play.

Just to say that the mentioned Asus DSL-AC68U modem/router is very compatible with BT TV as well as offering very strong wifi.

Another advantage could be it's ability to transmit BT's internet channels over wifi if physical connection to a Youview box is difficult.
