wiring and the master socket

Hi All,

can anyone tell me who owns what with ref to the wiring and master socket.

Does Bt own the wiring up to the master socket?

Do I own the wiring after the master socket?

We have had Bt out now 4 times to fix the same fault, we have not been charged, each time they have been they have just touched and cut the wires by the junction box which is outside the house. The last time they came the put a new box outside and also put a small junction box just inside the garage. We live in a town house so the master socket is on the first floor so I Am guessing that the trouble is with the wiring. This is the the wiring before the master socket. Will I be charged for this wiring if it needs replacing?

Re: wiring and the master socket

You are responsible for all wiring after the master socket Openreach are responsible for all wiring up to the Master socket

Re: wiring and the master socket

Also, If you have a box that looks like this:

Then Openreach are responsible upto this grey Openreach box and your responsible for all the wiring after it.

The box is usually found outside. They have recently started to be used so you may not have one but have a master socket instead.

Hope that helps.

Re: wiring and the master socket

Openreach started installing External NTE's about 6 years ago and stopped installing them about 5 years ago for two main reasons;

A. They are not compatable with FTTC Broadband

B. Property Developers could never quite grasp that Openreach were only responsible upto the grey box outside and none of the internal wiring/sockets, not even the first socket that entered the property from the external NTE.

I worked for repair complaints at the time and the absolute hassle those things caused on new build sites was a nightmare.

Re: wiring and the master socket

Box out side is just a junction box, that is a box with a cover with a couple of joined wires. Does not look like the pic above.

box in garage two feet away is just a junction box about the size of a match box.

Then upstairs to the white master box which has the words open reach on it, it has the plate you take off to reveal the test socket

good comments so far and is what I thought.

Re: wiring and the master socket

Although openreach are responsible for the wiring up to and including the main socket any damage to this cabling on your premises by you there would be a charge by openreach for the repair.

Re: wiring and the master socket

Can I ask as to who is responsible for the master socket itself?

reason I ask is that my phone line stopped working in August a couple of months after I had infinity installed. The engineer put in a new master socket at the time.

an openreach engineer came out and replaced the faceplate of master socket and everything worked properly.

2 months later I've now been billed £99 for the engineer visit. Doesn't seem right or fair as the fault was with master socket.
