Asked to return a device I never had

I keep receiving text messages from BT asking me to return a kit however they must have the incorrect number as I have never had BT wifi and I am at a loss who to contact to advise. They are now saying that they will pass the £295 charge to a debt agency if the kit is not returned.

Whilst I am sure they don't have my name or address registered against the account, I need my number removing to stop any further text messages.

Any ideas who i can notify?

Re: Asked to return a device I never had

If you are saying you are getting texts to your mobile intended for someone , presumably who was a BT customer, but either in error or deliberately they provided BT with your mobile number instead of their own when they signed up with BT , then I doubt you can do anything, even if there were some  info on the texts to locate the account holder  , you personally are not authorised to do anything as it’s not your account, even if the texts are to the wrong number, however there is no risk to you , they are not chasing you , it’s  just your mobile number is incorrectly associated with the other person, it’s simply a small annoyance of getting a unsolicited text , if it bothers that you can’t you just block the number ?

Re: Asked to return a device I never had

The text messages are intended for the person who's account the number is attached to.

If you have never had Services with BT then you have no issues, if and when a debt colle lion agency contact you by phone then simply advise you are not that person and they will continue by letter or email to the details BT have on file there will be no.impact to you outside of a potential call from the collection agency or further communication from BT.

I don't believe you would be able to do anything about removing the incorrect data as under GDPR it is not data they hold about you so you cannot ask for it to be corrected.

Re: Asked to return a device I never had

BT should remove the number as it's breaking data protection laws because they're sending confidential info about their customer to someone they shouldn't. I had a similar situation where someone used my sky email in error and I got all their contracts etc. Sky CS used the same GDPR excuse to do nothing, the ICO agreed with me and it was removed.

Just complain to the ICO that BT are breaking data protection laws if they refuse to remove the number after you've provided proof the number has nothing to do with the person owing. Can be more common than you think as mobile numbers get recycled.

Re: Asked to return a device I never had

Just throwing this out there, how long have you had your mobile number? I only ask because a similar thing happened to a friend of mine who also kept getting calls and texts around six months after he had taken out a new phone contract with a new sim and number. A debt collection agency kept calling and texting him and it became obvious that they had absolutely no idea who he was and he didn't tell them who he was or where he lived. This happens because mobile phone numbers are routinely recycled and reissued. This means that months later you can get random calls out of the blue intended for the previous holder of the number. This isn't advice but if it were me, I'd just ignore, block and delete. I'm on permanent silence unknown callers. Very recently, I kept getting missed calls everyday for almost a week from a number apparently associated with BT Retentions. In the end I just blocked it permanently.
